PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Dartmouth women's volleyball team snapped a three-game losing skid with a 3-2 win over Brown on Friday night at Pizzitola Center. The Big Green (13-6, 6-3) came from two games down to defeat the Bears (4-14, 2-6) in five. Game scores were 27-30, 22-30, 30-21, 30-23, 15-9.
Four Dartmouth players were in double-digit kills led by Kelsey Johnson (Carlsbad, Calif.) with 15. Megan MacGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) added 13 while Whitney Ward (Hilton Head, S.C.) and Morgan Covington (Katy, Texas) each had 12. Amanda Marston (Austin, Texas) tied a game-high 34 digs, as she was one of five Big Green players in double-digits in that category. Sandy Barbut (Los Angeles, Calif.) was right behind Marston with 28 while MacGregor recorded a double-double with 22. Ward had her first double-double of the season with her 12 digs.
Despite hitting only .179 the Big Green notched 71 kills on the night while outdigging Brown, 125-116. The Big Green was also tops with 11 total team blocks, led by Barbut with five. Katie Hirsch (Austin, Texas) was Dartmouth's top setter with 53.
At the outset, Dartmouth quickly took control of game one, going on a 13-1 run to take a 19-9 lead. However, the Bears began to chip away at the lead, cutting it to 24-18, then going on an eight-point run after a Dartmouth kill to go up 26-25. Bruno then pulled away for the win, despite hitting .091 in the game to Dartmouth's .138.
The second game was the Bears' best by far, as they opened with a 9-1 run and hit .242 to easily take the game and seemingly, control of the match. However, that would be the only game in which the Bears hit better than .111, as they hit just .089 combined in the other four games. Dartmouth, on the other hand, improved its percentage in each game, hitting .190, .220, and .235 in the third, fourth, and fifth games, respectively.
"I was so happy we won," said head coach Ann Marie Larese. "We had to be careful because Brown has been on a tear recently and they came out firing. We had control of the first game but they really fought back to win that. We really gutted it out because it was the first time all season we had lost the first two games and had to battle back to win. Whitney Ward was an instrumental blocker after she found her groove while Sandy Barbut had some very important kills for us late. We really handled them in the third and fourth games and for the first time in any of the five-game matches we've played we had the lead going into the fnal game."
The Big Green still sits in third place in the Ivy League as Princeton, in first along with Yale and Penn, in a tie for second, all won their games on Friday night. Dartmouth now travels to Yale for a 4:00 pm matchup on Saturday
