NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Dartmouth women's volleyball team was unable to continue its winning momentum from a victory over Brown last night, as the Big Green dropped a five-game match to Yale on Saturday. Game scores were 28-30, 30-24, 30-23, 26-30, 13-15.
Jess Thomas (Tampa, Fla) led her team with 16 kills as Sandy Barbut (Los Angeles, Calif.) added 13, Megan MacGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) had 12 and Frances Samolowicz (St. Charles, Ill.) was also in double-digits with 11. For the second night in a row Amanda Marston (Austin, Texas) had over 30 digs with 31 as Katie Hirsch (Austin, Texas), Barbut and MacGregor each had 18. Thomas also had a double-double with 17 digs. Hirsch was tops on her team with 51 assists.
Dartmouth recorded seven service aces while outblocking Yale, 15-12 as Morgan Covington (Katy, Texas) led her team with eight total blocks.
The loss drops the Big Green to 13-7, 6-4 Ivy while Yale improves to 13-5, 7-2 in the Ivy League. The Bulldogs exacted revenge on Dartmouth after the Big Green swept Yale in three earlier this season.
"We let the first game get away from us," said head coach Ann Marie Larese. "That first game was critical to put Yale in the hole and instead it was us in the spot. We came out on fire the second and third games but we were a little hot and cold with our blocking. We contained our serving errors but we were just unable to capitalize on the errors that Yale made. We never quit and I'm proud of our effort but we got tentative. We need to learn to just go for it and not second guess ourselves."
Dartmouth continues on the road next weekend traveling to Princeton on Friday and Penn on Saturday. The Big Green is out of contention for the Ivy League title but they can still play spoiler and finish in the top-half of the league with victories over the Quakers and the Tigers.
