HANOVER, N.H.. - With a game-high 84 digs and 49 kills the Dartmouth women's volleyball team won a huge Ivy match over the visiting Yale Bulldogs on Friday in Leede Arena. The victory is the Big Green's third straight 3-0 sweep of an Ivy opponent this season as Dartmouth won, 30-28, 30-20 and 30-19. Led by Amanda Marston (Austin, Texas) with 24 digs, Dartmouth had five players record double-digit digs.
The win moves the Big Green to 10-3, 3-0 in the Ivy League while the Bulldogs falls to 7-4, 1-1 Ivy. The victory is Dartmouth's first over Yale since 2004.
The opening game had both teams battling for the advantage before Yale took an early 12-9 lead before moving to 15-10. Sandy Barbut (Los Angeles, Calif.) helped her team by serving three straight points to put the Big Green down 15-16. The two then traded the lead before a block by Barbut and Morgan Covington (Katy, Texas) and three serving points by Megan MacGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) allowed Dartmouth to tie the score at 21-all. With the score again tied at 25, MacGregor recorded a huge block to give her team a one-point lead. Another Big Green block by Katie Hirsch (Austin, Texas) and Frances Samolowicz (Charles, Ill.) at 27-26 followed by two Jess Thomas (Tampa, Fla.) kills gave Dartmouth the victory.
In the second game Dartmouth took a small lead in the early going before the Bulldogs tied and pulled ahead at 9-7. A kill by MacGregor followed by a Hirsch-MacGregor block allowed the Big Green to pull ahead and never look back. Samolowicz served three points as Dartmouth led by as much as eight at 24-16. With its biggest lead at nine, a Thomas kill for game point gave Dartmouth the win.
The third game had the Bulldogs showing some life, taking two straight points on massive blocks. A Samolowicz kill gave Dartmouth the lead back, forcing Yale to burn a time-out. One of four service aces by Hirsch along with another tandem block by Barbut and Covington gave Dartmouth a 20-11 lead. Hirsch helped the cause, serving the Big Green to six points as the home team led by as much as 10 enroute to the win in the final game.
The Big Green hit over .200 in all three games, ending with a .245 hitting percentage. Thomas and Covington were in double-digits for kills with 15 and 14, respectively. Hirsch set a game high 42 balls as Dartmouth had eight total team blocks.
Taking its best record in the Ivy League to the floor, the Big Green will be home again tomorrow with a 4:00 pm match against Brown.
