HANOVER, N.H.. - Junior Jess Thomas (Tampa, Fla.) recorded a game-high 20 kills along with two blocks and two service aces to lead Dartmouth to a 3-0 win over Brown Saturday afternoon at Leede Arena. The Big Green, currently riding a three-match win streak, hit .321 while holding the Bears to a low .198.
Dartmouth improved to 11-3 overall, 4-0 in the Ivy League with the 30-27, 30-27, 30-23 win. The Bears, who showed impressive stamina throughout, fell to 2-10, 0-3 in the league.
Two players recorded at least 10 kills for Dartmouth while Katie Hirsch (Austin, Texas) was stellar with a game and season-high 54 assists. Sandy Barbut (Los Angeles, Calif.) had 10 kills while Amanda Marston was the lone player in double-figures with 18 digs. Five players had at least one ace, with Megan MacGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) leading the way with three.
Brown came out on quickly in the first two games, taking early leads. In the opening contest the Bears erased a 4-1 deficit to take an 18-13 lead. Thomas helped her team get back into it by serving eight straight points as Dartmouth pulled ahead 21-19. The contest see-sawed after that as neither team seemed to gain an advantage. Thomas eventually brought the victory to the Green side with a massive kill for the 30-27 win.
In game two a 4-1 lead by the Bears had Dartmouth on its heels again but kills by Thomas and Barbut made the game even for the next eighteen points as there were five ties and eight lead changes. MacGregor began serving at 24-19, building up a five point advantage as the Big Green pulled out another close, 30-27 win.
Game Three started out as the most evenly contested game of the match as five lead changes happened in the first ten points. Barbut and Hirsch each served or helped Dartmouth to five and seven points, respectively as the Big Green eventually ran up a 17-10 lead. The Bears would never get closer than four points as a Brown attacking error sealed the game and the match for Dartmouth.
Dartmouth is now one of two unbeatens in the league, Princeton swept Columbia and Cornell over the weekend to move to 3-0 in Ivy play and stay a half game behind the Big Green. Dartmouth is back in action next weekend, traveling to Columbia on Friday for a 7:00 pm match and Cornell on Saturday at 4:00 pm.
