BRADENTON, FL -3/16/07- Six innings of play would be all mother nature would allow today, as Dartmouth and the Colonels of Eastern Kentucky played to a 1-1 tie before heavy rains moved into the Bradenton area.
As was the case in yesterday's 4-1 win over Fairfield, Dartmouth struck first on the scoreboard, this time in the third inning. With one out, Erik Bell (Sierra Madre, CA) recorded his second walk of the game and moved up into scoring position on his first stolen base of the season. Jason Blydell (Nahant, MA) reached base via an Eastern Kentucky error, setting up runners at first and third. Bell scored one batter later on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior Damon Wright (Dallas, TX).
The 1-0 lead would evaporate in the Colonel half of the fifth. Dylan McMaine tripled to left field and scored when Frank Krailler doubled down the leftfield line. An infield single followed that double, putting Eastern Kentucky in a position to take the lead. But a failed suicide squeeze attempt resulted in Krailler getting picked off third base. And as quickly as the threat appeared, it was thwarted when Big Green starter Russell Young induced an inning ending double play.
Play was halted in the bottom half of the sixth inning and would be called two hours later after heavy rainfall.
Young (1-0) followed up his strong opening effort against Cincinnati with another inspiring effort. The southpaw allowed just five hits in six innings of work, walking just one while fanning three.
Dartmouth (2-2-1) is back in action tomorrow when they take on Massachusetts at 2:30 p.m.
