BRADENTON, Fla. - Locked in a tie in the ninth inning, Dartmouth used singles off the bats of junior Damon Wright (Dallas, Texas) and sophomore Ray Allen (Longwood, Fla.), highlighting a five-run outburst for a 14-10 victory Saturday over Massachusetts.
With the win, Dartmouth extended its record to 3-2-1 and has now won three of the last four games.
In the second inning, sophomore Kyle Evans (Springfield, Mo.) jumped on a 2-1 offering from UMass' Jared Freni, hitting his first collegiate homerun deep to leftfield. The two-out rally was extended by Jason McManis' (Flower Mound, Texas) second double of the season and an RBI single off the bat of Erik Bell (Sierra Madre, Calif.). The following inning, Nick Santomauro (North Caldwell, N.J.) and Brett Gardner (Seattle, Wash.) each delivered runs, scoring singles to help increase the lead to 6-1.
Big Green starter Chase Carpenter (6 IP, 11 hits, 0 BB, 2 SO) danced in and out of trouble throughout the early stages of the game, as the right hander yielding a pair of runs in the fifth to close the Dartmouth lead to 9-5. UMass third baseman Jim Macdonald doubled down the right field line scoring a pair before Carpenter retired the final two batters ending the threat.
But UMass tacked on one additional run in the sixth before evening the contest up in the seventh with three runs. Macdonald and Jim Cassidy had a pair of run scoring doubles before Travis Munsey greeted reliever Kyle Zeis (Solana Beach, Calif.) with a squeeze bunt that tied the game up at nine all.
That would set up the decisive ninth inning, which saw the Big Green send ten batters to the plate. Pinch hitter Andrew Nacario (Carlsbad, Calif.) reached base on a hit by pitch to open the inning off UMass' Mike Dicato (0-2). After moving up on a bunt, Bell walked and Jason Blydell (Nahant, Mass.) singled to load the bases up with one out.
Wright's single gave Dartmouth the 10-9 lead, and insurance came one batter later, as Allen drove home a pair with a single to center field. Santomauro added an infield single to knock in a pair, capping the five-run frame.
The Minutemen managed to push across a run in the ninth off Zeis (3 IP, 3 hits, 3 BB, 4 SO), who picked up his first win of the season, before the junior retired the final batter on a fly ball to the outfield.
Dartmouth's bats came during the afternoon contest, tallying a season-high 18 hits in the victory. Five different Big Green hitters tallied at least two hits and every starter collected at least one hit on the afternoon. Bell had four hits and three RBI, Santomauro added three singles, first baseman Michael Pagliarulo (Winchester, Mass.) had a pair of singles and a double, while Evans and McManis each chipped in with two hits apiece. In the victory, Evans had a career-high three RBI while throwing out a pair of base runners attempting stolen bases.
