Bradenton, FL -3/18/07- Freshman Robert Young pitched seven strong innings, but Ohio State managed to push across two runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings for a come from behind 6-3 victory over the Big Green today.
Making his first career start, Young (Cleburne, TX) was masterful in seven innings of work. The left hander scattered eight hits on the afternoon, three coming in his final two innings of work, while fanning four batters.
The Buckeyes (8-3) opened began their scoring on the day with a solo run in the second inning off of Young (0-1). Adam Schneider reached on an infield single and moved up to third base on a one out double to centerfield off the bat of Michael Arp. Tony Kennedy's ground ball eluded the Big Green defense setting runners up at first and third, but Young induced a ground out before retiring the side on a strikeout of shortstop Cory Rupert.
But as quickly as Ohio State took the lead, it evaporated just as fast, as Dartmouth pushed across a pair of runs in the third. Erik Bell (Sierra Madre, CA), who has hit safely in six of the Big Green's seven games this season, and Damon Wright (Dallas, TX) each singled and crossed the plate when Mike Pagliarulo (Winchester, MA) clubbed a 1-1 offering from starter J.B. Schuck for a two run double. Schuck (1-0), who allowed a season high six hits in the loss, managed to escape further damage with two of his seven strikeouts to set down the side.
In the sixth, Ohio State evened the score up at two all. Schneider singled sharply to left field, and after a walk and a fielding error, crossed home plate on a Kennedy ground out.
Nick Santomauro (No. Caldwell, NJ) smacked a run scoring double down the left field line in the seventh to close the Ohio State lead down to 4-3, but the hosts put the game out of reach with two additional runs in the eighth to seal the 6-3 victory.
In the loss, the Big Green was paced by Bell, Wright and Santomauro, who each had two hit afternoons.
Dartmouth (3-3-1) takes to the field again tomorrow morning, when they battle Illinois with first pitch set for 10:30AM.
