Big Green Drop Third Straight To Florida Atlantic, 14-6
BOCA RATON, FLA. ˆ The Big Green baseball team scored five
runs in the first three innings, but couldn't hang on to
the lead, as the Owls of Florida Atlantic University gave
Dartmouth its third straight loss in Boca Raton, Fla., 14-
6.
The Big Green kicked off the top of the first inning
loading the bases for Michael Pagliarulo (Winchester,
Mass.) who belted a sacrifice shot to the warning track in
right field, scoring James Wren (Granbury, Texas) to take
the opening lead.
Florida Atlantic evened the score at one apiece in the
bottom half of the inning when Daniel Bomback was sent home
by Robbie Widlansky, who hit a sacrifice fly to record the
Owls first run.
Dartmouth's Raymond Allen (Longwood, Fla.) broke the early
tie on the first pitch of the second inning, as he blasted
a solo shot over the left field wall for his first homerun
of the season, and just the team's second. The Big Green
got one more in the second when Kyle Evans (Springfield,
Mo.) took the first pitch he saw down the left field line
for a double, then scored on an sac fly by Jason McManis
(Flower Mound, Texas) one batter later.
The Big Green continued their scoring in the top of the
third inning when an error and a walk put Paliarulo and
Damon Wright (Dallas, Texas) on the base paths. Andrew
Nacario (Carlsbad, Calif.) laid down an attempted sacrifice
bunt that was fielded and thrown away by the pitcher Andrew
Tomlin. The throw got away from the Owls first baseman
Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg and coasted to the fence,
scoring the two runners and increasing Dartmouth's lead to
5-1.
The Owls took care of their four-run deficit when Widlansky
hit a stand-up double to the left field wall, scoring
Bomback and William Block. Widlansky would also cross the
plate after Mike McKenna blasted his eighth homerun of the
year over the right field fence, bringing the score back to
a tie at five apiece.
McKenna broke the tie in his next at bat, after he took a
fastball to centerfield, scoring one run. Spanjer-
Furstenburg and Travis Ozga combined for three RBI for
the Owls on back-to-back doubles that put Florida Atlantic
up, 9-5, heading into the sixth inning.
Both teams went three-and-out in the sixth, bringing the
Big Green up to the plate in the top of the seventh.
Pagliarulo led off the inning rifling a single up the
middle, followed by Nacario getting hit by a pitch, which
put two Dartmouth runners on base early. Evan's sacrifice
ground ball brought in Pagliarulo and closed the scoring
gap by one.
Big Green pitcher Jeff Wilkerson (Walnut Creek, Calif.),
who started the game, worked six innings giving up nine
runs, 11 hits, and striking out five. Relieving the senior
in the bottom of the seventh was freshman Miller Aldrich
(College Station, Texas) who gave up one run in his first
action of the day, making it a 10-6 score.
Florida Atlantic brought in its sixth pitcher of the day,
Mike Salivar, who opened the eighth inning hitting the
first two batters and walking the third to load the bases
with no outs. Head coach Kevin Cooney had enough of
Salivar and brought in Brandon Cooney to do work against
the Big Green. The senior struck out the side of Dartmouth
batters, relieving the Owls of the bases loaded jam.
Florida Atlantic went on to score four more runs in the
bottom half of the eighth, extending their lead to 14-6,
just three outs shy of the win.
The Big Green were unable to get anything going in the
final frame, as the Owls pitching sealed the, 14-6, win.
Dartmouth will come to the yard again tomorrow when they
take on Illinois for the second time in three days in
Bradenton, Fla. That game is scheduled to start at 1:00
p.m.
NOTE: The game was delayed for an hour and twenty minutes
due to umpire issues.
