BRADENTON, FLA. – Illinois scored in five of the nine innings to chip away at Dartmouths pitching staff and give the Illini the three-game sweep in Game Seven of the Big Greens spring trip in Bradenton, Fla.
Both sides went three-and-out in their first plate appearances, leaving it a scoreless game after the opening inning.
After getting hit by a pitch and stealing second base, Shawn Roof would put the first mark on the board for the Illini. Ryan Hastings would drive Roof home with his RBI single in the top of the second inning.
Dartmouth would answer in the bottom half of the inning, when Damon Wright (Dallas, Texas) led off singling to right field, then stealing second. Wright would cross home plate two batters later as Jason Blydell (Nahant, Mass.) knocked a single into the outfield, scoring Wright and evening the score at one apiece.
Illinois' Lars Davis would add another tally in the top of the third when he belted a solo shot over the right field wall against Big Green right-hander Chase Carpenter (Bartlett, Tenn.).
But again, the Big Green would keep with the Illini. Back-to-back singles by James Wren(Granbury, Texas) and Nick Santomauro (North Caldwell, N.J.), gave Erik Bell (Sierra Madre, Calif.) the free pass home, bringing the score back to a tie at twos.
Both teams would remain scoreless until the sixth inning when Davis' took another Carpenter pitch deep over the wall for the second time of the day. After Davis' solo shot, three Illini hitters would hit for extra base hits, bringing in two more runs and pushing Illinois on top of the Big Green, 5-2.
Michael Pagliarulo (Winchester, Mass.) tried to stick with the Illini hitters, rocking a double into centerfield, scoring Santomauro, but still came up short on the scoreboard, 5-3.
Brandon Wikoff would score one more time for Illinois in the top of the ninth, extending their lead to, 7-3, with just three outs left for the Big Green.
Raymond Allen (Londwood, Fla.) would bring in Wright in the bottom of the final frame, but that was all Dartmouth could muster up against the Illini pitching. The Big Green now drops their fifth straight game, as Illinois picks up their seventh of the season in the sweep.
The Big Green will take to the field again tomorrow, when they start a two-day series against Northwestern at the IMG Academy.
