BRADENTON, FLA. – The Wildcats of Northwestern posted a six-run eighth inning to seal the win over the Big Green baseball team, 11-4, in the team's spring trip finale in Bradenton, Fla.
Northwestern put the first run on the board in the bottom of the second inning, when Mike Kalina blasted an RBI double to the center field wall, scoring Max Mann and giving the Wildcats the early, 1-0, lead.
The Big Green took the lead in the top of the third, as Raymond Allen (Longwood, Fla.) led off the inning getting hit by a pitch. Allen went on to steal second base, and advance to third on a throwing error by the Wildcats catcher. The next batter, Jack Monahan (Overland Park, Kan.) would drive Allen home to record his first RBI of the season and tie the score at one apiece
Nick Santomauro (North Caldwell, N.J.) would give Dartmouth the outright lead, after his two-run triple to right center field scored Erik Bell (Sierra Madre, Calif.) and Jason Blydell (Nahant, Mass.). Santomauro would too cross the plate in the inning, to put the Big Green on top 4-1.
The Wildcats would claw their way back in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring four runs on three hits and three walks to regain the lead, 5-4.
Jake Owens extended Northwestern's lead in the top of the eighth on a shot to centerfield, scoring Newman from second. Owens would score on a fielder's choice grounder to first base. Michael Pagliarulo's (Winchester, Mass.) throw home was just late, as the Wildcats padded their lead to 7-4.
Northwestern kept rolling in the eighth, putting up four more runs to push the score to 11-4, with just three outs left for the Big Green bats.
In their last at bats, Dartmouth would only put one runner on the base paths, and score none, to record their seventh straight loss.
The Big Green concludes their spring trip with a 2-8 record in the sunshine state, dropping their last seven contests. The team will be back in action on Wednesday, March 28, when they travel to Quinnipiac.
