HAMDEN, CONN. – Quinnipiac put up 17 hits against Dartmouth's six, to defeat the Big Green baseball team, 11-6, in Hamden, Conn., Wednesday afternoon.
Erik Bell (Sierra Madre, Calif.) led off the game for the Big Green taking the first pitch of the game in the back, and being awarded the free pass to first base. James Wren (Granbury, Texas) and Nick Santomauro (North Caldwell, N.J.) also reached base on a single and an error to load the bases for Damon Wright (Dallas, Texas). The junior belted a two-run single up the middle scoring Bell and Wren to give Dartmouth the early 2-0 lead.
Andrew Nacario (Carlsbad, Calif.) reloaded the bases taking a pitch the opposite way that couldn't be handled by the right fielder, to record the Bobcats second error of the inning. The next hitter, Michael Pagliarulo (Winchester, Mass.), ripped a single into left field, bringing in two more runs and extending the Big Green lead to, 4-0, after the games first at bats.
Quinnipiac all but eliminated their deficit the bottom of the first, when a three-run inning brought the score to, 4-3.
Santomauro, who leads the team in RBI's, added another to his list after he hit an RBI-single into center field with two outs in the top of the second to push Dartmouth's lead up to 5-3.
The Bobcats took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth, as they scored three straight runs on three hits off Dartmouth pitchers Bobby Steinsdoerfer (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and Ben Murray (Grants Pass, Ore.).
Pete Kummerfeldt added one more run to the Quinnipiac scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth, when he blasted a solo shot over the centerfield wall to extend the Bobcats lead to 7-5.
The next at bats, the Big Green brought it back to a one-run game. Santomauro hit a fly ball to left field, but the Bobcats fielder couldn't handle it as Jason McManis (Flower Mound, Texas) scored on the error.
The fluctuating strike zone made it difficult for the Big Green pitchers in the eighth inning, as a passed ball and a walked in run brought the Quinnipiac lead to 10-6.
Quinnipiac finished off the Big Green's last three batters to seal the win for the Bobcats. With the loss, Dartmouth falls to 3-10-1 on the season. The squad begins league play this weekend when they travel to Columbia and Penn.
