CINCINNATI, OHIO – The Dartmouth baseball (1-2) team finished off their season opening weekend, taking one-of-two games in the day's doubleheader against Cincinnati. The Big Green fell to the Bearcats, 4-0, in Game One, but rebounded quickly to take the second game, 8-4.
Cincinnati's Dan Osterbrock pitched a complete game three-hitter against the Big Green in Game One. The sophomore struck out five Dartmouth batters and only walked three.
The Bearcats offense was explosive from the opening pitch, as they scored three runs in their first at bats, jumping out to an early lead.
The Big Green had a key chance in the sixth inning to cut in on their scoreless streak, as the bases were juiced for Raymond Allen (Longwood, Fla.) with just one out. The sophomore couldn't produce a hit though, hitting into a 6-4-3 double play to eliminate the threat.
In the second half of the inning the Bearcats broke the silence once more, when a sacrifice fly brought in another run, increasing their lead to 4-0.
Dartmouth left two runners on base in the top of the seventh inning, to seal the win for Cincinnati. Chase Carpenter (Bartlett, Tenn.) was credited as the losing pitcher for the Big Green.
Game Two of the day went in the favor of the Big Green. After being down, 3-0, early to the Bearcats, Dartmouth was able to send 11 batters to the plate in the third inning, which produced six runs. Several throwing and fielding errors by Cincy gave Dartmouth their first lead of the day.
Five different Big Green sluggers tallied an RBI in that inning, as they took the, 6-3, go-ahead and never looked back.
The very next inning, the Big Green scored twice more as a wild pitch and an RBI single by Damon Wright (Dallas, Texas) increased their lead to, 8-3.
Junior Erik Bell (Sierra Madre, Calif.) led the way for Dartmouth collecting four of the teams 12 hits. Nick Santomauro (North Caldwell, N.J.) and Jason McManis (Flower Mound, Texas) also had two hits apiece.
Dartmouth now has some time off before traveling down to Bradenton, Florida for their spring trip. In that time the team will play 10 games in 10 days.
