NEW HAVEN, CONN. – The Big Green baseball team dropped the first game, 3-1, but came back to win the second contest, 7-6, today in a doubleheader against Red Rolfe Division opponent Yale in New Haven, Conn.
The Bulldogs put the first run on the board in the bottom of the second inning, after an error on James Wren (Granbury, Texas) put the first Yale runner on base. A sacrifice bunt, followed by an RBI single by Stefan Schropp, put the home Bulldogs up 1-0.
Jack Monahan (Overland Park, Kan.) led off the top of the third inning lacing a single up the middle to give Dartmouth its first base hit of the game. The next batter, Jason Blydell (Nahant, Mass.) advanced Monahan with a sacrifice bunt, but the following two batters were unable to drive Monahan home.
Senior Marc Sawyer led off the bottom of the third inning making Yale history, as he belted a double into centerfield, becoming the Bulldogs all-time leader in hits with 214. The next hitter, Ryan Lavarnway took Dartmouth lefty Russell Young (Cleburne, Texas) deep over the right field wall for his 11th homer of the season, increasing the lead to 3-0.
Jason McManis (Flower Mound, Texas) opened up the top of the sixth inning with a double down the left field line for Dartmouth's third hit of the game. After the next two hitters went down, Nick Santomauro (North Caldwell, N.J.) ripped a single up the middle, scoring McManis, and putting the Big Green on the board.
The freshman's RBI would be the only run the Big Green could muster up in Game One of the day's doubleheader, as they drop their fifth game in a row by the final score of 3-1.
Young finished the game throwing a complete six innings giving up seven hits and two earned runs. Young also struck out two batters.
In Game Two, it was the Big Green who scored first in their opening plate appearances. Wren reached base early on a fielder's choice, and then Wright drove him home on a single to left field giving Dartmouth its first lead of the day.
Sawyer led off the bottom of the first for Yale roping a double to the centerfield wall, followed by Lavarnway getting hit by a Jeff Wilkerson (Walnut Creek, Calif.) pitch. The Bulldogs put on the hit-and-run with Justin Ankney at the plate, who hit a single into left centerfield, evening the score at one apiece.
Back-to-back hits by Blydell and Ezra Josephson (Key West, Fla.) in the second frame put two quick runs in scoring position for the Big Green. McManis came through in the nine spot, knocking a single past the third basemen, scoring Blydell. A wild pitch by Yale hurler Chris Wietlispach scored Josephson from third and gave Dartmouth an early, 3-1, lead.
Josephson came back in his next at bat in the top of the third and blasted an RBI single up the middle to record just his second RBI of the season and first career multi-hit game. The freshman's hit put the Big Green up 4-1.
Ankney put another run on the board for the Bulldogs, after he took a Wilkerson pitch over the right field wall for a solo shot, bringing the score to 4-2.
The number eight and nine hitters came up big in the bottom of the fourth, when Pedro Obregon led off with a double, followed by an RBI triple by the next batter Stephen Miehls. Sawyer came through again in the next at bat with an RBI single which evened the score at fours heading into the fifth inning.
Ankney, again, broke the tie in his next at bat, hitting his second home run of the day and fifth of the season, giving the Bulldogs the 5-4 lead.
Bobby Steinsdoerfer (Crystal Lake, Ill.) came in for relief of Wilkerson in the bottom of the sixth inning. Wilkerson ended the day.....
Steinsdoerfer walked his first two batters, but then settled down to get out the next three, including one strikeout.
The Big Green offense turned it on in the seventh, scoring three runs on three hits, bringing Dartmouth back to the top of the scoreboard with a 7-5 lead.
Yale brought the score within one in the bottom of the eighth when a RBI single to right field by Sawyer brought the Bulldogs into striking distance. Kyle Zeis (Solana Beach, Calif.) came in to pitch with one out in the eighth for the Big Green and struck out his first batter, then got some help from his defense to get out of the inning still ahead, 7-6.
Dartmouth added nothing more in their final at bats, leaving it up to the defense to get the save and the win.
Zeis retired three straight Bulldog batters to record the, 7-6, save for the Big Green and snap Dartmouth's five-game losing streak. The squad now moves to 6-21-1 on the year and 3-9 in the Ivy League.
The Big Green will wrap up their weekend with Yale tomorrow when they come back to Yale Field for another doubleheader beginning at 12 noon.
