NEW HAVEN, CONN. – Day two of the weekend doubleheader against Yale University went the way of the Bulldogs, as the Big Green baseball team dropped both games. Dartmouth lost the first game 4-3 and the second 4-2.
The Bulldogs came out strong in their first at bats, leading off Game One with back-to-back singles. The next hitter, Marc Sawyer, drove both runners home with a base-clearing double to right center field.
The Big Green got one back in the top of the second when Damon Wright (Dallas, Texas) scored all the way from first on a single to centerfield by Raymond Allen (Longwood, Fla.).
But the Bulldogs kept increasing their lead in the bottom half of the inning, as Stephen Miehls crossed the plate after Dan Soltman and Josh Cox put reached base giving Yale the early, 3-1, lead.
In the top of the fourth, Dartmouth brought the game within one as Jack Monahan (Overland Park, Kan.) hit a sacrifice fly into left field, which scored Allen and gave Monahan just his third RBI of the season.
In their next at bats, the Big Green tied it up as a lead-off single by Jason Blydell (Nahant, Mass.) put an early runner in scoring position. Blydell wound up scoring two batters later on a RBI-double by Wright to left field.
Big Green starting pitcher, Robert Young (Cleburne, Texas) found himself in a little trouble in the bottom of the fifth, as Cox and Sawyer led off with doubles, increasing their lead to, 4-3, with no outs. The freshman didn't get too rattled after the first two batters reached, as he produced three straight outs to follow. But the damage was done, and the Big Green found themselves down by one.
Yale put more pressure on the Big Green defense in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases on two singles and a walk. Head coach Bob Whalen elected to relieve Young at that point, and brought in Bobby Steinsdoerfer (Crystal Lake, Ill.) to get the squad out of the bases loaded jam.
The senior got Cox to line into a double play to get out of the inning, keeping the Big Green down one, but still within striking distance.
Young ended his day throwing 5.1 innings, giving up 10 hits and three earned runs, while striking out two.
In the seventh and final scheduled inning, the Big Green put their first two batters on base, putting the game-tying run in scoring position with no outs. But the Yale closer, Brian Irving, was able to retire the next three batters to record his fourth save of the season and give the Bulldogs the 4-3 win.
Game Two started slow, as both team's bats took some time to warm up. Each defensive side was busy though, with the two teams only combining for three hits through three innings of play.
The Bulldogs put some pressure on in the bottom of the fourth, as the first two hitters reached on singles. Dartmouth starter, Chase Carpenter (Bartlett, Tenn.), walked another batter in the inning to load the bases with two outs. The junior got freshman Chris Sweeney to fly out though, to end the fourth inning with the score still tied at zeros.
Yale finally broke the stalemate in the fifth inning when Miehls led off reaching base on an error by Carpenter. Two more Bulldog hitters roped singles into the outfield, letting two runs cross the plate, giving Yale a 2-0 lead.
Dartmouth got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, as Nick Santomauro (North Caldwell, N.J.) got on board with a two-out walk. Wright, Allen and Andrew Nacario (Carlsbad, Calif.) all followed with singles, scoring two runs and evening the game at two apiece.
After giving up a lead-off single in the top of the seventh, Zach Cheaney (Houston, Texas) came in to take over on the mound for the Big Green. Carpenter ended his afternoon giving up eight hits, no earned runs, two strikeouts and two walks.
The freshman gave up a RBI single to the next batter, which gave the Bulldogs command of the lead. After walking the next batter, Dartmouth decided to switch to a right-hander in Kyle Zeis (Solana Beach, Calif.).
Zeis struck out one batter and got another to lay down a ground ball, but it was unable to be fielded clean, allowing another run to cross the plate for Yale. The junior struck out the next batter on three straight pitches to get out of the inning, but down 4-2.
The Big Green were only able to put two runners on base in the final two innings, producing no runs, giving the squad the Game Two loss, 4-2.
Dartmouth now moves to 6-22-1 overall and 3-11 in the Ivy League, while the Bulldogs improve to a 6-8 mark in the league.
Before their first home game of the season on Wednesday against Brown, the team will travel to the University of Vermont for a non-league contest on Tuesday for a 3:00 p.m. start.
