PRINCETON, N.J. – The Big Green baseball team dropped their fourth straight Ivy League contest today, as the Cornell Big Red swept Dartmouth in a two-game series, 4-2 and 12-3, being played at Princeton University.
Game One began as a pitchers duel, as Cornell's Jim Hyland and Dartmouth's Robert Young (Cleburne, Texas) pitched a scoreless three innings. The Big Green finally got to Hyland as four batters singled in the fourth inning, bringing in two runs, and giving Dartmouth the first lead of the game, 2-0.
Cornell tied the score on one swing in the top of the sixth inning. After a lead-off double by Domenic DiRicco, Jimmy Heinz took Young deep over the left field wall to tie the score at two apiece.
The Big Red took the lead outright in the seventh and final inning, when three hits and an error cost Dartmouth two more runs against, giving Cornell the 4-2 lead.
Hyland shut down the Big Green in their final at bats in the seventh allowing only one hit and no runs, securing the win for Cornell.
Cornell started off Game Two jumping all over Big Green hurler Jeff Wilkerson (Walnut Creek, Calif.). Three of the first four Big Red batters got on base with singles, before Nathan Ford drove in the first run of the game, giving Cornell the, 1-0, lead.
Steven Dannaway added one more run for Cornell in the second frame, after he went yard against Wilkerson over the left field wall, extending the Big Red lead to 2-0.
Cornell kept hammering away at its lead in the fourth inning as they poured on seven runs on six hits, including a grand slam, pushing the score to 9-0.
Dartmouth got on the board in the bottom half of the inning when Nick Santomauro (North Caldwell, N.J.) scored after reaching base on a single. Santomauro scored on a double from Raymond Allen (Longwood, Fla.).
The two teams remained scoreless until the eighth, when Erik Bell (Sierra Madre, Calif.) blasted a double off the left field wall, scoring Jason McManis (Flower Mound, Texas). Santomauro score Bell two batters later on a single down the left field line, bringing the score to 9-3.
The Big Red proceeded to rack up three more runs in the top of the ninth off freshman right-hander Miller Aldrich (College Station, Texas) to post a, 12-3, lead.
Adam Loeding came in to close out the Big Green in the ninth and allowed one hit, but no runs, sealing the victory for Cornell.
