BoxscoreHANOVER, N.H. - In front of a packed crowd of 847 the Dartmouth women's volleyball team swept the Harvard Crimson for the second time this season winning 3-0 on Friday in Leede Arena. The win gives the Big Green both the best overall and Ivy League record this season at 9-3, 2-0 Ivy. Harvard falls to 5-7, 0-2. Dartmouth did not allow a Crimson player to get in double-digits in kills as Harvard only managed a .147 hitting percentage. Game scores were 30-23, 30-21, 30-25.
The first game was point-for-point in the early going before the Big Green tallied five straight points en route to a Crimson time-out. Harvard was able to recover and get the score to 10-6 before
Jess Thomas (Tampa, Fla.) helped her team increase the lead to 21-16 followed by one of eight Dartmouth serving aces on the night by
Frances Samolowicz (St. Charles, Ill.) to give the home team a seven-point advantage. Another Harvard time-out at 25-17 and four more points by Samolowicz and
Katie Hirsch (Austin, Texas) set up game point for the Big Green as a bad set by the Crimson gave Dartmouth the victory.
Game Two had the Big Green out of the gates early before Harvard tied the score at four. Dartmouth again took a slight lead before the Crimson again pulled even. The Big Green used kills by Thomas,
Morgan Covington (Katy, Texas) and
Megan MacGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) to give itself a 15-9 lead. Harvard closed the gap at 20-16, the closest they had been since early in the game. Huge kills by Hirsch and Samolowicz forced another Crimson time-out as Thomas scored three straight points to give the home team a 26-17 lead. Harvard held the Big Green on two straight game points before a massive block by Covington drove the final point home.
The third game was all Dartmouth as the Big Green took a 19-9 lead. The Crimson did not give up and slowly started chipping away at the lead, getting as close as 22-17 but were never able to get closer than four points as a Thomas kill gave the Big Green the win and the match.
Dartmouth hit .262 on the night with eight total blocks. Thomas was one of three Big Green players in double-digit kills as she, Covington and Samolowicz each had 12. Hirsch recorded a game-high 44 assists while MacGregor was tops with three service aces. Thomas also recorded a double-double as she racked up 16 digs.
Dartmouth now enters the meat of its schedule, the 14-match Ivy League slate that will determine the conference champion as the Big Green takes on Yale and Brown on Oct. 5 and 6 at home.
