Hanover, N.H. - History repeated itself as the Dartmouth and Boston University women's soccer teams played to overtime for the fifth time in the last six years, ending in a 1-1 tie.
The teams played a hotly contested 110 minutes and were even in nearly every category and Boston (6-5-1) held a slight 18-17 shot advantage while Dartmouth (4-3-1) held the edge in corner kicks, 7-4. Dartmouth senior keeper Laurel Peak (Redding, Conn.) made one dramatic save after another on the wet field, with 11 total. BU keeper Janie Reilly was solid in her own right, making seven stops.
Dartmouth leads the all-time series between the schools, 6-3-4, and they played to a 1-1 double-overtime last season as well. This was the Big Green's fourth overtime game of the season and the first one it did not win.
Junior Kelsey Quick (Bernardsville, N.J.) had the Big Green's first real scoring chance of the game in the 14th minute when she fired at Reilly who made a point-blank save. Three minutes later is was Peak's turn when she made a leaping save of a shot from Corie Halasz.
The teams battled throughout the half, but Boston struck first in the contest. Jessica Luscinski broke away on the right side and sent a cross in to Halasz who one-timed it, just beating Peak to the far post at 37:15 to go up 1-0. BU nearly had a chance to put the game out of reach in the 41st minute when Elizabeth Speck broke away down the right side. She would have had a good look at the goal but senior back Emily Forline (Bethesda, Md.) chased her down and made a great tackle in the right side of the box to thwart the attempt.
The Terriers held a slight, 7-5, shot advantage in the first half and Dartmouth came out of the break fired up and ready to find the equalizer. The teams went on to take eight shots in the second half, but Dartmouth controlled the pace of play.
Dartmouth had two scoring opportunities in the 57th minute when Peyton Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) had her shot saved and Quick sent in a rocket off a feed from Myra Sack (Wynnewood, Pa.) that Reilly somehow grasped.
Forline was an inch away from her first collegiate goal in the 66th minute when she collected a rebounded ball and fired from 20 yards out but hit the post. Peak made another huge save in the 76th minute when Luscinski had a breakaway and fired from 15 yards out on the left side.
That seemed to energize her team as the Big Green finally broke through in the 82nd minute to tie it up. After drawing a foul near midfield, Quick took a free kick from 45 yards out that was saved by Reilly. The ball rebounded and Tata was there to collect it and score her second goal of the season for the tie.
The Big Green held a 4-3 advantage in shots through 20 minutes of overtime but the urgency for both teams was palpable. Throughout the battle, Peak and the Big Green defense came up big including a pair of tie-preserving clears by rookie Erin Fleischli (San Mateo, Calif.) and junior Ali Hubbard (Marshfield, Mass.).
Dartmouth's back line of Fleischli, Forline, Melisa Krnjaic (Washington, D.C.), Whitney Odden (Bozeman, Mont.) and Jenny Stone (Wilmette, Ill.) off the bench did a solid job to hold off the Terriers.
Quick was all over the field and paced the offense with five shots while Tata finished with four. Hubbard had a pair of headers go just over the crossbar while senior Becky Poskin (Leawood, Kan.) battled up front all night for Dartmouth.
Halasz paced the Terriers with six shots including five on goal.
Five Dartmouth players went the distance, playing 110 minutes including Peak, Forline, Odden, Fleischli and Katie Davis (San Marino, Calif.). Six players stayed on for a full 110 for BU.
Dartmouth is back in action this Saturday when it heads to New Jersey to take on Princeton at 1:00 p.m.
