HANOVER, N.H ? The Dartmouth women's soccer team dropped a midfield-based battle with Ivy foe Yale, 2-0 this evening at Burnham Field.
The Bulldogs snapped a two-game losing streak in the series with the Big Green and improved to 6-5-1, 1-2 Ivy while Dartmouth dropped to 5-5-1, 0-3 Ivy. Dartmouth has outshot each of its Ivy opponents and given up only four goals but has yet to score in conference play.
Yale applied serious pressure to the Dartmouth defense around the 25th minute when it had a series of throw-ins and scrambles in the box but never got a shot off.
The Bulldogs broke through with an opportunistic goal by Miyuki Hino at 25:21. After a cluster in the box, Dartmouth keeper Laurel Peak (Redding, Conn.) came out to grab the ball but Hino tipped the ball. Peak got a hand on it but the ball skidded and slid into the goal.
The Big Green battled back, earning a critical corner in the 35th minute. The ball bounced about and senior back Emily Forline (Bethesda, Md.) collected it outside the 18 and fired a clear shot but Yale keeper Ayana Sumiyasu was there for the save.
Yale put a scare into Dartmouth just minutes later when Hino had a hard shot saved by a diving Peak. The ball slipped off her hands and another Yale forward swooped in but was offsides.
After a half mostly played in midfield, each team finished with two shots.
Dartmouth had a great scoring chance in the 55th minute when Melisa Krnjaic (Washington, D.C.) sent in a corner kick that Peyton Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) headed strongly at the goal but Sumiyasu made the save.
The Big Green controlled the pace for much of the second half, limiting the Bulldogs' offensive chances to breakaways. One finally paid off for Yale with a two-on-one in the 76th minute when Hino scored her second goal similarly to her first. Emma Whitfield played the ball across the box and Peak came out to get it but Hino beat her to the ball and sent it far post to put Yale up, 2-0.
Dartmouth put its offense into high gear in the final 14 minutes, with Becky Poskin (Leawood, Kan.) and Kelsey Quick (Bernardsville, N.J.) throwing all they had at the Bulldogs. Quick nearly got one with a long ball from the right side that missed just inches high.
The Big Green ultimately outshot the Bulldogs, 10-7. Sumiyasu kept her team in the game defensively with six saves while Peak made three.
Poskin, Quick and Tata each had three shots for Dartmouth.
The Big Green is back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 14 for a non-conference game against Bryant at 4:00 p.m. at Burnham Field.
