HAMILTON, N.Y. ? The Dartmouth men's and women's swimming and diving teams both lost to Colgate this afternoon in non-league competition.
Colgate took a 143-98 win over the Dartmouth men, who drop to 0-3 on the season. On the women's side, Colgate won 159-82, dropping the Big Green to 1-2 overall.
Dartmouth's best work was done off the diving boards today as the women swept first through third in the 1 meter dive and took first and second in the 3 meter, with first-place finishes by freshman
Erica Serpico (Moorestown, N.J.) in both events. Serpico won the 1 meter with 267.82 points and 3 meter with 257.85. Junior
Kathleen Brady (Upland, Calif.) was second on both boards and
Bridget Duffey (Boxford, Mass.) took third in the 1 meter.
It was more of the same in men's diving with
Michael Brown (Newton, Mass.) winning the 1 meter with a score of 301.95 and
Chris Plante (Valrico, Fla.) taking the 3 meter with 268.80 points. Brown took second in the 3 meter and Plante was second in the 1 meter.
The Big Green women's best results of the day came in the relays. In the 200 medley relay, Dartmouth took second and fourth with the second-place team of
Galen Barry (Wayne, Pa.),
Heather Jankins (Raynham, Mass.),
Kelsey Pinson (Portland, Ore.) and
Caitlin Nicholson (Ithaca, N.Y.) finishing in 1:51.14. The 400 freestyle relay team of Jankins, Nicholson,
Elizabeth Kamai (Corte Madera, Calif.) and
Hillary Preston (Medina, Wash.) took second in 3:37.47.
Individually,
Maddie Steiner (Dallas, Texas) had a pair of second-place finishes in the 200 yard freestyle (1:54.91) and the 100 yard freestyle (54.24).
Virginia Selden (Birmingham, Ala.) was the first of three top-four finishers for the Big Green in the 200 butterfly, taking second in the 2:08.44. On either end of the spectrum, Jankins was third in the 50 freestyle in 24.85 while
Anna Sonstegard (Sioux Falls, S.D.) was third in the 1650 free in 18:31.52.
On the men's side, freshmen Mickey Ahern (Old Westbury, N.Y.) and
Jack Driessen (Ridgefield, Conn.) were the lone winners for the Big Green in pool, with Ahern taking the 200 backstroke easily in 1:54.79 and Dreissen winning the 200 breaststroke in 2:16.69.
Senior captain
Andrew Ballentine (Pendelton, Ind.) paced the Green with a second-place finish in the men's 400 individual medley in 4:17.03. Classmate
Chris Koppel (Wilmington, Del.) was second in the 200 butterfly, followed closely by
Marco Chu (Newton, Mass.) who finished fourth. Chu also took third in the 200 freestyle in 1:46.70 but it was
John Hill (Erie, Pa.) who nearly stole the win, taking second in 1:45.63, just .03 off first place. Hill had heartbreak again in the 100 freestyle, finishing second in 48.27, just .16 short of the top time.
In the 200 medley relay, Ahern, Chu, Hill and
Matt Stumpf (Palm Harbor, Fla.) finished second in 1:38.86.
Both teams are back in action this weekend when the men head to Navy on Saturday to compete against Navy and Brown while the women host Ivy foe Brown on Sunday.
