BRADENTON, Fla. ? The Dartmouth baseball team got out to an early lead, but couldn't hold off the Redhawks of Miami University as the Big Green fell, 14-9, on Tuesday afternoon.

Junior first baseman Michael Pagliarulo (Winchester, Mass.) led the offensive attack for the Big Green with two hits, two runs scored and two runs batted in. Sophomore Nick Santomauro went 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI for Dartmouth.

Dartmouth jumped out to a 6-0 after the top of the first, highlighted by a two-run single by Pagliarulo. The Big Green loaded the bases on two walks and a single from Santomauro, before Pagliarulo singled up the middle to put the Big Green up 2-0. Dartmouth loaded the bases again and junior Jack Monahan (Overland Park, Kan.) took a walk for another run, then junior Johnathon Santopadre (Vacaville, Calif.) reached on an error that plated two more runs.

The Redhawks fought back with a run in the bottom of the first and exploded for nine runs on eight hits in the following frame. Tommy Nurre's three run blast to left center provided Miami with the 10-6 advantage after two innings. The Redhawks could have increased its lead, but second baseman Jason McManis (Flower Mound, Fla.) made a diving play to his left to stop the damage.

Dartmouth kept Miami off the board for the first time in the third inning as senior centerfielder Jason Blydell (Nahant, Mass.) made all three putouts, including an impressive diving catch in right center.

The Big Green got one back in the fourth to cut the deficit to 10-7 with a Santomauro groundout that scored Blydell, who reached on a walk and advanced on two wild pitches.

After the Rehawks added a single run in the fifth, the Big Green cut the lead to 11-9 with two runs of its own in the top of the seventh. Dartmouth loaded the bases with no outs and senior co-captain Damon Wright (Dallas, Texas) drove one run across with a sacrifice fly, followed by a high chopper from Santopadre that he ran out for an RBI single.

Miami went back up by four runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run single from J.D. Mynhier that found a hole past a diving Santopadre for the 13-9 advantage. The Redhawks added another run in the eighth and closed out the ninth after allowing one batter reach.

Dartmouth (3-5) will be in action on Thursday afternoon as the Big Green hits the field against Kansas, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
