HANOVER, N.H.
? Sophomore James Wren's (Granbury, Texas) bloop single down the right field line gave the Dartmouth baseball team an extra inning come-from-behind
victory over Vermont,
10-9, at Red Rolfe Field on Tuesday evening.
Dartmouth
fell behind early, but was able to battle back three times in the late innings
to overcome a 5-0 deficit to take the victory from the Catamounts. Dartmouth improves to 21-13 on the season, while Vermont falls to 16-15.
Senior co-captain Damon Wright (Dallas,
Texas), junior Michael Pagliarulo (Winchester, Mass.)
and Wren lead the offensive attack with three hits apiece. Wright added three
runs batted in and was one hit away from the cycle, while Pagliarulo had an RBI
and two runs scored. Wren posted two RBI, including the game-winner. Sophomore
Nick Santomauro (North Caldwell,
N.J.) contributed with two hits,
including a two-run double for the Big Green.
On the hill, freshman Ryan Smith (Greenlawn, N.Y.)
finished off the Catamounts in the late innings with four frames worked,
allowing one unearned run and fanning four to earn his first collegiate win. Seniors
Bobby Steinsdoerfer (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and Kyle Zeis (Solana Beach,
Calif.) also provided great relieve in the
middle innings allowing just three runs, which gave Dartmouth a chance for the comeback.
Vermont
jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead over the first two innings, highlighted by Justin
Milo who tripled home a run and connected on a round tripper in his first two
plate appearances.
Dartmouth
got on the board in the third inning with a three spot to cut the lead to 5-3. Junior
Johnathon Santopadre (Vacaville,
Calif.) reached on an error,
advanced to second on a walk from freshman Jeff Onstott (Houston, Texas) and
both scored on a two-run double by Santomauro. After Pagliarulo was hit by a
pitch, Wright crushed a double to right center that scored Santomauro, but
Pagliarulo was gunned down at the plate.
Vermont added a single run
in the fifth to make it 6-3, but Dartmouth
came right back to get to within one run with a groundout from Wright that
scored one and he was followed by Wren who singled home one of his two runs on
the afternoon to cut it to 6-5.
The Catamounts kept on coming with single runs in the seventh
and eighth. The Big Green showed no quit though as Pagliarulo collected a run
scoring single that plated Santopadre who was hit by a pitch to make it 8-6
Vermont.
In the bottom of the ninth, Dartmouth got Wren to lead off with a walk. Senior
Jason Blydell (Nahant, Mass.) kept the rally going with a base hit
through the right side to push Wren to second. Then junior Jack Monahan (Overland Park, Kan.)
earned first with another hit by pitch which was Dartmouh's third of the game. The
Big Green got to within one run on a wild pitch that allowed Wren to score and
Santopadre tied it at 8-8 with a sacrifice fly.
Vermont
countered in the next half inning as Matt Duffy led off with a double down the
left field line. Ethan Paquette came to the plate and laid down a bunt which
Smith got to but threw it away allowing Duffy to score from second. The lead
didn't last long as Pagliarulo singled to right field and scored all the way
from first on a ringing triple from Wright to even the score at 9-9.
In the bottom of the 12th, Onstott got on base with his
second hit of the afternoon and after two outs and an intentional walk, Wren
came to the plate and blooped a single down the right field line that scored
Onstott to give Dartmouth the 10-9 extra inning victory.
The Big Green will have a few days off before heading south
to Harvard to face the Crimson in an important four-game home and home set,
beginning with a doubleheader in Cambridge
at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
