HANOVER, N.H.
? The Dartmouth baseball team wrapped up its 2008 regular season with an 8-5
loss to Boston College on Wednesday afternoon at Red
Rolfe Field.
Dartmouth drops to 24-15 on
the season, while Boston
College improves to
21-24.
Junior Raymond Allen (Longwood,
Fla.) led the way for the Big
Green with two hits and two runs batted in. Classmate Johnathon Santopadre (Vacaville, Calif.)
contributed with two hits of his own, along with an RBI.
After getting down early, the Big Green relievers settled
things down, giving up only one run in the final six innings. Sophomore Ben
Murray (Grants Pass, Ore.) was first to enter and he went two
innings, allowing a run and fanning one. Senior Bobby Steinsdoerfer (Crystal Lake, Ill.), freshman
Dan Ternowchek (Glenmoore, Pa.)
and senior Kyle Zeis (Solana Beach,
Calif.) combined to pitch four
innings of shutout ball, allowing just two hits.
Boston
College jumped out to an
early 7-0 lead after putting up six runs in the second innings, which three of
the six were unearned due to misplays by the Big Green. The Eagles had two
highlights in the inning with a two-run double from Eric Campbell and a solo
homer by Garrett Smith.
Dartmouth got one run back in
the bottom of the second as senior co-captain Damon Wright (Dallas, Texas)
crushed his team-high eighth homer of the season deep to left center to cut the
lead to 7-1.
The Eagles increased the lead to 8-1 in the fifth inning and
Dartmouth
answered with one of its own on an RBI double to right field from Santopadre. Freshman
Brandon Parks (Mission Viejo,
Calif.) reached second on a
two-base error by the rightfielder and came all the way around to score on the
double by Santopadre to make it 8-2 after five.
The Big Green closed the gap in the seventh thanks to back-to-back
walks and a hit batsman that loaded the bases for senior Jason Blydell (Nahant, Mass.).
Blydell had a productive groundout to score one to make it 8-3, then Allen
slapped a single to center field to score two more, but he was gunned out by
the catcher as he tried to stretch it to second base.
Dartmouth loaded the bases in
the ninth with one out on base hits by senior Jason McManis (Flower Mound, Texas) and freshman Sam Bean (Needham,
Mass.) and a walk by junior Kyle Evans (Springfield, Mo.).
However, after a strikeout the Big Green grounded out to end the game as Boston College
defeated Dartmouth,
8-5.
The Big Green finished off its regular season, but now the
postseason begins as Dartmouth hosts Columbia in a
best-of-three series for the Ivy League Championship. The series kicks off on
Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m. from Red Rolfe Field. Admission is free for all
fans and for those who cannot make it Dartmouth
will be running free streaming video with an audio feed.
