Five Run Seventh Sends Big Green Past Quinnipiac

HANOVER, N.H. ? The Dartmouth baseball team exploded for five runs in the seventh inning to pull away from Quinnipiac as the Big Green defeated the Bobcats, 7-2, in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday.

Dartmouth moves to 14-9 on the season, while Quinnipiac falls to 5-17.

Freshman Jeff Onstott (Houston, Texas) led the Big Green with a 3-for-5 day, including an RBI double in the seventh. He drove home two runs and scored one of his own. Sophomore Nick Santomauro (North Caldwell, N.J.) chipped in with two hits and two runs batted in. His two-run triple in the seventh broke the game open for the Big Green.

On the mound, sophomore Ben Murray (Grants Pass, Ore.) pitched well, going six strong innings, allowing one run on four hits and fanning one.

Dartmouth got on the board first in the third inning on an RBI single from Onstott. Junior Johnathon Santopadre (Vacaville, Calif.) led off the inning with a double to left center and after senior Erik Bell (Sierra Madre, Calif.) moved him to third on a ground out, Onstott drove him home with a single over the head of the shortstop.

The Bobcats tied the game with a run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from John Delaney. Ben Farina got to second base on a double, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on the fly out.

In the seventh inning, Dartmouth batted around and collected seven of its 13 hits in the game, four of which were for extra bases. Freshman Brandon Parks (Mission Viejo, Calif.) led off with a double over the head of the left fielder. Santopadre followed with a bunt single, which moved Parks to third base. Parks would score on an error by the first baseman. Then Onstott plated Santopadre on another double to left to make it 3-1 in favor of Dartmouth.

The back breaker came when Santomauro hammered a 1-0 pitch deep to center field to score two and make it 4-1 Big Green. Santomauro, however, made the first out of the inning as he overran third base.

After a fly out, senior co-captain Damon Wright (Dallas, Texas) joined the hit parade with a double to left center and past the lunge of the centerfielder. He then scored on a RBI single up the middle from sophomore James Wren (Granbury, Texas) to extend the lead to 7-1.

Quinnipiac got one back in the eighth, but senior Kyle Zeis (Solana Beach, Calif.) shut down the Bobcats in the ninth to give Dartmouth the 7-2 win.

The Big Green hit the road this coming weekend as Dartmouth plays back-to-back doubleheaders at Brown, beginning on Saturday at 12 p.m. The Big Green will be back at Red Rolfe Field on April 16 to host Holy Cross at 3 p.m
