South Bend, Ind. - The Dartmouth men's soccer team gave
#8 Notre Dame all it could handle on the Irish's home field before falling,
2-1, on a goal in the final minute. Just when it seemed the game was headed into
overtime, Irish forward Dave Donohue made a run into the box to pick up a pass.
Milligan guessed correctly and dove to his right, but Donohue slipped the ball
past him and scored the game-winner with just 12 seconds left in regulation. Leaving
just seconds on the clock to score, the Big Green's upset hopes were dashed in
the final minute.
It was the first game of the season for the Dartmouth men, playing in
the Mike Berticelli Memorial Classic. The Big Green started off strong, with
rookie Lucky Mkosana (Bulawayo,
Zimbabwe)
taking the first shot-on-goal of the game and forcing Irish goalkeeper Andrew
Quinn to make a save in the fourth minute. Unfortunately for Dartmouth,
Notre Dame responded quickly when Michael Thomas fired a far rocket into the
left corner, just past the reach of senior goalkeeper Sean Milligan (Westport, Conn.).
Around the 20th minute in the first half, the
Irish took a series of three-straight corner kicks with Milligan making a big
save off a header on the first, the defense blocking the second and Dartmouth
clearing the third to push the ball downfield. The Big Green pushed the tempo
offensively late in the half and maintained control, but was still outshot,
9-2, for the half.
Dartmouth
came out of the gates fast in the second half, capitalizing off a corner kick
to score the equalizer in the 47th minute. Junior Donnie Surdoval (Sparta, N.J.) timed his
header perfectly off the corner from sophomore Andrew Olsen (Norwell, Mass.)
to score his first collegiate goal. The Big Green carried the momentum from the
game-tying goal and had tremendous energy throughout the half.
Dartmouth
kept the pressure on the eighth-ranked Irish for the entire second period, holding
a commanding 11-4 lead in shots for the half and forcing Quinn to make four
saves. For its part, the Dartmouth
defense kept Notre Dame in check, with Milligan making two stops in the second.
For the game, Dartmouth
and Notre Dame were tied with 13 shots apiece, but the Big Green led with six
shots on goal to the Irish's five. Milligan finished with three saves while
Quinn had four.
Dartmouth's big opening
weekend continues on Sunday when it faces #6 Indiana at 11:30 a.m.
