Box Score
HANOVER, N.H. ? After netting nine goals on Saturday, the
seventh-ranked Dartmouth women's hockey team continued to put the puck in the
net with seven goals, including four in the second period, in a 7-3 win over
Providence in non-conference action at Thompson Arena.
For Dartmouth (12-5-2),
freshman Kelly Foley (Boston, Mass.)
posted her first collegiate two-goal game, while senior Maggie Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn.)
also recorded three points with a goal and couple of helpers. Senior netminder
Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta.) made 23 saves between the pipes for her 10th win of
the season. The Big Green had seven players with at least two points.
For Providence
(11-9-2), Alyse Ruff posted a goal and an assist with Erin Normore and Laura
Veharanta potting the other two. Genevieve Lacasse pushed aside 25 shots in
net, including 12 in the second period.
The Big Green didn't waste time taking a 1-0 lead with a
score 2:56 into the opening period. Sophomore Amanda Trunzo (Andover,
Minn.) worked the puck over to senior Julia
Bronson (Arlington, Va.)
who put a shot on net that was deflected by junior Sarah Parsons (Dover, Mass.)
in front. The puck had eyes and found the net through the pads of Lacasse to
put Dartmouth
on top.
The Friars got back into the contest with a power play from Ruff
coming with 5:36 left in the first period. Dartmouth
had killed off a 5-on-3 advantage, but Providence
got even as Ruff followed a shot from Jennifer Freidman that Clemis couldn't
cover and she tucked the puck inside the near post to tie the game at 1-1.
In the second period, both teams exploded with six goals
with four coming from the Big Green. Dartmouth's
first of the period came on the power play as Foley netted the first of her two
in the period. She was set up nicely by junior Jenna Cunningham (Medicine Hat, Alta.) and
Kennedy and roofed the puck top shelf for the score to make it 2-1, 3:20 into
the period.
Providence,
however, came right back with a goal from Normore with the assist going to Kate
Bacon. Bacon fired a shot on net and the puck found Normore wide open at the
far post and she tapped it in to tie the game at 2-2.
Dartmouth
went on top for the third time in the game, thanks to Trunzo's team-leading 11th
score of the season on the power play. Cunningham slid a shot from the point
and Trunzo was able to change the puck's direction and past Lacasse for the 3-2
lead with 7:41 remaining in the second.
The Friars once again proved they can come back and did it with
2:23 left in the middle frame. Laura Veharanta was given the goal with the
assists going to Ruff and Christie Jensen.
With the score tied at 3-3, the Big Green netted two goals
in the final two minutes with both of them coming 24 seconds apart. The first came
from Foley for her second of the night, while freshman Reagan Fischer (Irma,
Alta.) netted her fourth in the last three games and continues to light it up
with a three-game goal-scoring streak.
In the final period, Dartmouth
added to its lead with a pair of scores to make it a 7-3 final. Kennedy
increased her point total to three, while senior Marley McMillan (St. Paul, Minn.)
tallied her first goal of the season.
The Big Green outshot the Friars, 32-26, and Dartmouth had two goals
on the man advantage, both coming in the second period. Providence finished 1-for-9 on the power
play.
Dartmouth
will be back in action this coming Friday as the Big Green travels to face
in-state rival No. 8 Wildcats of New Hampshire at 7 p.m.
