FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - Senior co-captain Jesse Adler (Winnetka, Ill.) will play for two titles today in D Flight singles and the B Flight doubles with freshman Sarah Leonard (Norwalk, Conn.), while sophomore Shelley Carpeni (New York, N.Y.) and freshman Jeri Reichel (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) will vie for the D Flight doubles title at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center Women's College Invitational.
In two days of play, the Big Green went 21-7 at this national event that featured 264 competitors from every Ivy League school plus schools ranging from North Carolina State to Boston College.
The second-seeded Adler reached the final of her singles flight without dropping a set, downing third-seeded Ashley Miller from North Carolina State 6-2, 6-4 yesterday afternoon in the semifinal. She plays Harvard's Alex Lehman in the final at 10 a.m. today.
In doubles action yesterday, Adler and Leonard downed Harvard's second-seeded team of Lehman and Sophie Chang 9-7, battling back from a 7-4, 40-0 deficit. The unseeded duo followed this upset with an 8-6 semifinal win over Brown's Carey Aboubakare and Misia Krasowski. They face Princeton's Ashley Blakely and Rachel Saiontz in the 9 a.m. final today.
In D Flight doubles, Carpeni and Reichel squeaked out a close first round match over a Rutgers team 8-7 (5), and then breezed through the rest of the draw, downing Brown's Jenny Lee-Kate Stewart 8-3, and then Syracuse's Kaitlyn Haycock-Allison Haynes 8-2. They face Brown's Julie Flanzer and Marisa Schonfeld in the final today at 9 a.m. Carpeni also made a run to the H Flight singles semis, beating an opponent from Fairleigh-Dickinson and Brown's Kate Sorokko before falling to Rutgers' Leonora Slatnick yesterday afternoon.
