SOUTH BEND, Ind. -? The Dartmouth men's lacrosse team hung in against eighth-ranked Notre Dame until the Fighting Irish reeled off 10 unanswered goals to defeat the Big Green, 19-7, on Saturday afternoon.
For Dartmouth (1-2), freshman Kip Dooley (Minneapolis, Minn.) led the Big Green with three goals, while junior Ari Sussman (New Haven, Conn.) and senior captain Tim Daniels (Duxbury, Mass.) each added tallies. In net, senior Pat Marshall (Lutherville, Md.) got the start and made 13 saves in the loss.
For Notre Dame (3-0), Duncan Swezey provided the highlights with four goals and an assist for five points. Grant Krebs and Peter Christman chipped in with four points apiece on three goals and an assist going to each. The Fighting Irish did a great job spreading the attack as Notre Dame had 10 different goals scorers.
Dartmouth didn't get off to a great start by allowing two goals in the first three minutes, including a man-up goal to Krebs, followed by one of Swezey's four on the afternoon. The Big Green, however, clawed their way back into the game with back-to-back goals by Daniels and Sussman to knot the game at 2-2 with 9:14 left in the opening quarter.
Notre Dame then took control with five-consecutive scores from five different goal scorers, including Swezey and Krebs to give the Fighting Irish a 7-2 lead. The Big Green cut the deficit on goals by Dooley and freshman Colin Delaney (Darien, Conn.) to slice the lead to 7-4. Zach Brenneman then gave the Irish an 8-4 lead with his second of the quarter with 24 seconds left.
The second quarter belonged to Notre Dame as the Fighting Irish reeled off seven-straight in the frame, after Dartmouth scored first.
The scoring was tamed in the third quarter as Notre Dame netted two goals coming from Kelly McKenna and Christman. Dartmouth failed to score and by the end of the third frame, the Fighting Irish had netted 10 unanswered goals to take a commanding 17-5 lead in the final quarter.
The two teams split goals in the final quarter as Dooley added his third of the contest and sophomore Dennis Lally (Hanover, N.H.) posted his first collegiate goal, coming with 1:04 left in the game.
The Big Green was outshot 48-24 by the Irish and Dartmouth took advantage of its lone man-up opportunity, while Notre Dame scored two goals in three chances with the extra man. Face-offs continued to be a problem for the Big Green as Dartmouth only came away with the ball nine times in 30 chances.
Dartmouth will be back on the road this coming Tuesday as the Big Green head north to face Vermont at 3 p.m.
