SAN JOS?, Calif. ? The Dartmouth bats were squelched by San Jos? State ace David Berner as the host Spartans beat the Big Green at Municipal Stadium on Thursday evening, 6-1. Jacob Bruns went 3-for-4 with a double, homer and two RBIs for San Jos? State ? which was briefly ranked in one poll last week ? as it improved to 15-3 in winning its sixth straight game. Dartmouth was left searching for its first win of the season, dropping to 0-4.
Berner (4-0) scattered four singles over his seven innings on the mound, allowing one run, walking one, hitting a batter and striking out seven. Over the first six innings, he faced just 19 batters, one over the minimum, thanks to a pair of double plays behind him.
Bruns got the scoring started in the second inning with a solo blast down the line in right off junior hurler Ben Murray (Grants Pass, Ore.) for a 1-0 Spartan lead.
In the third, San Jos? State scored four unearned runs, all with two out. Tyler Heil reached on an error with one gone, and Kyle Bellows singled, moving Heil to third with two down. The pair pulled off a double steal for the first run before Danny Stienstra, Anthony Bona and Bruns hit consecutive RBI doubles to make it 5-0.
The Spartans tacked on another two-out run in the fifth. Bellows singled with one out and promptly stole second. Murray struck out Stienstra, but Bona stroked another double to bring Bellows homeward.
Junior Jim Wren (Granbury, Texas) rapped out Dartmouth's first hit of the game leading off the fourth. But he was erased on a double play, as was sophomore Jeff Onstott (Houston, Texas) who led off the following inning with a single of his own.
The Big Green posted their run in the seventh as they got their only runners of the night past first base. Back-to-back singles by junior Nick Santomauro (North Caldwell, N.J.) and senior Mike Pagliarulo (Worcester, Mass.), and a walk to Onstott loaded the bases with one out. Junior Brett Gardner (Bellevue, Wash.) plated the run when he grounded into a force out and beat the relay to first.
Murray (0-1) took the loss in his first appearance of the year, tossing six innings while surrendering eight hits and six runs, only two of which were earned. He did not walk a batter and fanned two.
Junior Robert Young (Cleburne, Texas) and freshman Max Langford (Fairfax, Va.) ? making his collegiate debut ? each threw a scoreless inning of relief for the Big Green.
While Bruns was the offensive star, Bona provided two doubles and two RBIs, while Bellows was 2-for-3, scored twice and swiped three bases for the Spartans.
These two teams will conclude their two-game series tomorrow evening at 9 p.m. (EDT).
