SAN JOS?, Calif. ? Anthony Aguilera went 4-for-5 with 5 RBIs including a three-run homer to lead host San Jos? State to a 19-0 shutout victory over Dartmouth on Friday night at Municipal Stadium. Max Peterson tossed six scoreless innings to earn the win, helping the Spartans (16-3) win their seventh straight game, while the Big Green (0-5) were left searching for their first win of 2009.
San Jos? State, which just two days ago beat Chicago State 31-1, banged out 27 hits in the game with four players collecting three safeties to complement Aguilera's four-hit night. Kyle Bellows only had two hits, but one was a grand slam as he ? like Aguilera ? drove in five runs, while Jacob Bruns was 3-for-4 with three doubles, two runs and two RBIs.
Peterson (4-0) allowed just six base runners in his six innings on the hill, allowing three singles and three walks while striking out five. None of the six runners managed to get past second base as Peterson threw 80 pitches in his stint.
Bellows had a two-out single to score Craig Hertler from second in the first inning for the Spartans' first run. Then San Jos? State exploded for seven in the second, the last six coming with two outs. Bruns bookended the frame with doubles, scoring the first run and driving home the last, but Bellows delivered the big blow with a grand slam.
In the fourth, Aguilera cracked a three-run blast to give the Spartans an 11-0 lead. Consecutive RBI doubles by Bruns, Aguilera and John Shaffer ended the night on the mound for freshman Cole Sulser (Santa Ysabel, Calif.) in the fifth as the Spartans built a 15-0 advantage.
San Jos? State tacked on its last four runs in the seventh with the big blow being a two-run double off the bat of Josh Silver.
Sulser (0-1) took the loss in his first collegiate start as he helped preserve the bullpen, tossing 4.2 innings and fanning four. A.J. Pendleton made his first appearance in three years, having spent the past two years on a mission, tossing a scoreless eighth inning.
Senior co-captain Jack Monahan (Overland Park, Kan.) had two of Dartmouth's four hits, while junior Nick Santomauro extended his hitting streak to eight, dating back to last year, with a first-inning single.
Dartmouth heads to Santa Clara for a three-game series beginning tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. (EDT) with a doubleheader the following day at that time as well. San Jos? State has a day off tomorrow before hosting Fresno Pacific on Sunday at 2 p.m. (PDT).
