SANTA CLARA, Calif. ? The Santa Clara Broncos scored six times in the first then pulled away from visiting Dartmouth on Sunday afternoon for a 16-1 victory at Schott Stadium. Geoff Klein was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs to pace the 16-hit attack, while Thain Simon gave up just four hits and one run in his seven-inning stint to help Santa Clara (10-7) sweep the three-game series. The Big Green (0-8) suffered their eighth straight defeat to open the 2009 season, their longest season-opening slide during the tenure of head coach Bob Whalen, now in his 20th year.
The only trouble Simon (2-2) got into came in the fourth when junior Nick Santomauro (North Caldwell, N.J.) and senior Ray Allen (Longwood, Fla.) hit back-to-back doubles. Santomauro did not score on Allen's double, but did score Dartmouth's only run of the day when junior Jim Wren (Granbury, Texas) lofted a fly ball to right. No other Big Green hitters advanced past first base during the Simon's seven innings as the right-hander struck out seven.
By the time Dartmouth scored, Santa Clara already had an 11-0 lead. The Broncos rapped out five hits with three doubles in the first, batting around in the process, to build a 6-0 advantage. Klein drove in two in the frame with his first double, then had another double in the second to score Jon Karcich, who had walked to start the inning. Karcich did not have an official at-bat in the game, walking twice and getting hit by two pitches before being lifted in the seventh.
The first four Broncos in the third reached base to end the day for freshman hurler Max Langford (Fairfax, Va.), making his first collegiate start, and David Abraham greeted freshman Marco Mariscal (El Cajon, Calif.) with a two-run double for that 11-run lead.
Mariscal retired the side in order in the fourth, but sophomore Dan Ternowchek (Glenmoore, Pa.) surrendered three runs in the fifth. A Matt Long RBI triple was the big blow for Santa Clara.
The final two runs came in the eighth as Chris Morton and Patrick Glenn hit back-to-back homers, the first for each this year.
Three of Dartmouth five hits were doubles with senior Jack Monahan (Overland Park, Kan.) joining Santomauro and Allen with two-baggers. Sophomore reliever Ryan Smith (Greenlawn, N.Y.) had a solid outing with two scoreless frames, yielding just one hit with a strikeout.
Six Broncos had at least two hits, including Klein with his three safeties. Abraham also had three RBIs, while Long scored three times.
Dartmouth has two more games on its California trip, both at Cal Poly. The Big Green will play San Jos? State ? which took two from Dartmouth last week ? there first on Tuesday at 3 p.m. (EDT) before taking on the 16th-ranked Mustangs of Cal Poly on Wednesday at 9 p.m. (EDT). Santa Clara next plays at California on Wednesday at 2:30 (PDT).
