HANOVER, N.H. - Dartmouth jumped out to a 4-0 lead early into the game, but never saw the lead again, falling to Lehigh 11-9 for the Big Green's four-straight defeat
Dartmouth (1-4) had six players score goals in the contest, led by senior Jimmy Mullen (Mt. Lebanon, Pa.), freshman John DeChiaro (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and sophomore Joshua Etzion (Boca Raton, Fla.) with two apiece. Senior Pat Marshall (Lutherville, Md.) made nine saves in the losing effort.
Nine Mountain Hawks recorded goals, led by Ricky Cornetta and Kyle Gentile with two. Conor Murphy stopped 11 shots in Lehigh's first victory of the year.
Mullen and DeChiaro each scored two goals in the first quarter to give Dartmouth the 4-0 advantage. Mullen got the Green going 1:48 into the game with his seventh goal of the season. DeChiaro scored his second and third goals of the season for the 3-0 lead with 9:17 remaining in the quarter. Dartmouth took the 4-0 lead when Mullen scored his second goal of the contest with 3:42 showing on the clock.
The lead would not last long as Lehigh scored six unanswered goals, four of them coming in the last 2:45 of the first quarter.
John McNierney got the Mountain Hawks on the board on an unassisted goal. Chris Lubin scored his 10th goal of the season to cut the lead in half with1:07 remaining in the quarter. Dartmouth looked poised to end the frame with the lead as time wound down, but Lehigh got two goals in the final eight seconds to tie the game at 4-4. Brian Bienemann netted a pass from Max Dahlem to cut the Big Green lead to 4-3. Gentile scored his first goal of the afternoon with one second left in the quarter to even the score.
The Mountain Hawks scored two goals in the second frame to take a 6-4 lead into the half.
Dartmouth again jumped out to a quick start to the second half, scoring two goals in the first 1:26 to tie the game at 6-6. Junior Towny Swiggett (Huntington, N.Y.) got into the scoring column for the first time this year eight seconds into the half. Etzion scored his first goal of the game with 13:34 remaining in the third quarter. The teams exchanged the next six goals of the game until Will Scudder scored the game-winner on a man-up situation with 49 seconds left in the stanza.
Scudder won a face-off following Etzion's second goal and raced into the offensive zone, finding the net on an unassisted attempt. Gentile put the finishing touches on Dartmouth with 7:18 left in the game off an assist from Cornetta.
Dartmouth is next in action Saturday March 21 at 1 p.m. when the Green open up Ivy play with Brown at Sully-Fahey Field.
