Doubleheader Split with Brown Snaps 13-Game Win Streak

HANOVER, N.H. ? Dartmouth (14-10, 11-1 Ivy) banged out 16 hits in the first game of a doubleheader and scored eight times in the sixth to rally for a 14-9 victory over Brown and extend its winning streak to 13 games on Sunday afternoon at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park. But the Bears (13-15-1, 8-4 Ivy) clawed back in the second game, overcoming a five-run deficit before scoring three in the ninth for a 12-9 triumph and become the first Ivy team to defeat the Big Green this year. The 13-game streak was the third longest in school history, behind a 21-game winning streak in 1970 ? the year Dartmouth advanced to the College World Series ? and a 16-gamer in 1997.
Trailing 9-6 in the opener, Dartmouth quickly went to work on Brown closer Matthew Kimball (1-3) as the first seven batters reached base. Freshman Joe Sclafani (Palm City, Fla.) lined a single to left and sophomore Jeff Onstott (Houston, Texas) walked to bring the tying run to the plate. The first run scored on junior Nick Santomauro's (North Caldwell, N.J.) single through the hole on the left side of the infield. After a walk to senior Mike Pagliarulo (Winchester, Mass.), senior Ray Allen (Longwood, Fla.) tied the score with a two-run single back through the box.
Junior Jim Wren (Granbury, Texas) was next, and he gave the Big Green the lead with an RBI single of his own. With runners at the corners, Brown elected to intentionally walk junior Brett Gardner (Bellevue, Wash.) to load the bases and set up a force at any base. The strategy nearly worked as Kimball got the next two hitters on a strikeout and a shallow fly ball. But Sclafani, who started the inning with a single, ripped a triple to clear the bases. Onstott then doubled home Sclafani to complete the scoring.

But Brown scored seven in the third to take the lead. Pete Greskoff drove home the first run with a double, and Dan Shapiro brought home another with a grounder to first. A Robert Papenhause single brought home Greskoff, and another single followed by a stolen base put runners at second and third. A terrific catch by Big Green catcher Jack Monahan (Overland Park, Kan.) on a foul pop was the second out, and a dribbler to third looked like it would end the inning. The throw to first was wide, however, allowing both runners to come around and tie the score at five. Steve Daniels then launched his seventh homer of the season to give the Bears a 7-5 lead.
In the fifth, Dartmouth got a run back on an RBI single by Gardner, only to have Brown tally twice in the sixth on a bases-loaded single by Shapiro.
Freshman Kyle Hendricks (3-2) survived to earn the victory, tossing six innings while allowing 10 hits and nine runs, but only four earned. He walked two (one intentional) while striking out a season-high seven batters.
Sclafani, Onstott and Allen each had three hits for the Big Green, while Sclafani and Gardner both had three RBIs to lead the squad.
Although Brown scored three times in the first inning of the nightcap on a three-run blast by Matt Nuzzo, Dartmouth responded with three of its own in the bottom half. Sclafani and Onstott were catalysts once again with consecutive singles, then scampered home on a Pagliarulo triple to deep right-center. Allen brought home Pagliarulo with a sacrifice fly to center, tying the game at three.
As in the first game, the Big Green then opened up a five-run advantage. Onstott provided the big blow in a four-run second with a two-run double, and Santomauro ripped a two-out RBI single in the third, knocking out Bear starter Josh Feit with the score at 8-3.
The Bears gradually chipped away at the deficit, beginning with an run-scoring single in the fourth by Ryan Zrenda. But Dartmouth freshman pitcher Cole Sulser (Santa Ysabel, Calif.) escaped further damage by inducing a double play with runners at the corners to end the frame.
Greskoff hit an RBI triple and scored one batter later in the fifth to cut the Big Green lead to two at 8-6. And a Daniels triple in the sixth scored Zrenda, who had singled, with two outs, making it a one-run game.
In the seventh, it was Greskoff who tied it with a solo shot to right-center over the scoreboard, ending Sulser's day. Shapiro then greeted freshman Max Langford (Fairfax, Va.) with a four-bagger of his own, his third of the year, to put Brown up by a 9-8 count.
Dartmouth had one more rally in it on this day. Seniors Kyle Evans (Springfield, Mo.) and Johnathon Santopadre (Vacaville, Calif.) both singled to put runners on the corners, and with two gone Onstott hit a chopper to second that was mishandled, allowing the tying run to score.
Freshman reliever Marco Mariscal (1-1) retired the side in order in the eighth, but did not have the same luck in the ninth. After allowing a leadoff single to Nuzzo, Greskoff hit what appeared to be a routine fly to right-center, but the winds were howling out in that direction all day. The ball got caught in the jet stream and landed on the other side of the fence, unknotting the score with his eight home run of the season. Daniel Rosoff added an RBI double to cap the inning.
Rob Wilcox (2-1) picked up the win in relief for Brown, tossing 2.2 scoreless inning while giving up just one hit and a walk.
Sclafani was 3-for-6 in game two, finishing the day with six hits, while both Greskoff and Nuzzo also had three hits for Brown in the second game.
Dartmouth ends an 11-game homestand on Tuesday against Vermont at 3:30 p.m., while Brown hosts Marist in a twinbill on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
