HANOVER, N.H. ? Senior Kyle Evans (Springfield, Mo.) and junior Nick Santomauro (North Caldwell, N.J.) each rapped out three hits while seniors Mike Pagliarulo (Winchester, Mass.) and Johnathon Santopadre (Vacaville, Calif.) both smacked their first home runs of the season to send Dartmouth to a 13-3 victory over visiting Vermont at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park. The Big Green (15-10) won for the 14th time in their last 15 games, while the Catamounts fell to 7-19 overall.
Evans was a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish with a pair of doubles, a walk, hit by pitch, two runs scored and two RBIs. Seven of the nine Dartmouth starters had at least two hits, while Santopadre led the squad with four RBIs, two coming on his long ball just inside the left-field foul pole in the eighth inning.
On the mound, sophomore Colin Britton (Poughquag, N.Y.) looked as if he would be in for a long day at the onset of the game. The first two batters reached base on an error and a single before Matt Duffy hit an opposite-field homer to right, his team-leading seventh of the season, giving Vermont an quick 3-0 lead.
But Britton (2-2) gradually settled in to subdue the Catamounts over the next five frames. He surrendered a pair of singles in both the second and third innings, but escaped without any damage to the score. Britton then retired 10 of the last 11 batters he faced, finishing the day yielding just two earned runs in six innings while not walking a single batter and striking out one.
Sophomore Dan Ternowchek (Glenmoore, Pa.) allowed just one single over the final three innings to earn his first career save.
Trailing 3-0 in the second, Dartmouth went to work on Catamount starter Gavin McCullough (0-1). Juniors Jim Wren (Granbury, Texas) and Brett Gardner (Bellevue, Wash.) hit one-out singles, and Evans followed with an RBI double inside the bag at third. Santopadre drove in another run with a line single just over the second baseman's glove, putting runners on the corners. McCullough got the second out on strikes before Evans and Santopadre pulled off a double steal to tie the game at three.
Pagliarulo's home run, a line shot just over the fence in left-center, led off the third for a 4-3 Dartmouth lead. The next inning, Vermont gave the ball to Harry Glynne, who allowed an unearned run on a single, wild pitch, an error and a Santomauro sacrifice fly.
After a scoreless fifth, Glynne was plagued with a bit of wildness. Sophomore Jeff Onstott (Houston, Texas) opened the inning with a walk, and the Big Green loaded the bases on singles by Santomauro and Pagliarulo. Senior Ray Allen (Longwood, Fla.) was then hit by a pitch to force in a run, and after an infield pop, Gardner was drilled as well for another run. Leif Sorenson relieved Glynne, only to give up an RBI single to Evans and hit Santopadre with a pitch, the third hit batter with the bases loaded in the inning. Dartmouth tacked on one more run on a slow grounder to short that was booted for an error.
Santopadre hit his four-bagger in the eighth after Evans began the inning by getting hit by a pitch. Allen concluded the scoring when he blooped an RBI double just inside the right-field line.
Dartmouth plays again tomorrow afternoon at Holy Cross at 4 p.m. The Catamounts return to Burlington to host Plattsburgh State tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
