Magic Number at sixDartmouth, three games up in the Rolfe Division on both Brown and Harvard, hit the road for a four-game set against Yale this weekend. Although the Bulldogs are in last in the division at 5-7, they would be tied for first if they played in the Gehrig Division. The only way the Big Green can clinch the division title this weeked is by sweeping Yale while Brown and Harvard split their four-game series.
Last week in ReviewAfter taking three of four from Brown last weekend, the Big Green picked up a pair of non-conference wins over Vermont and Holy Cross. The 13-3 defeat of the Catamounts ended an 11-game homestand during which Dartmouth went 10-1. Seniors
Mike Pagliarulo and
Johnathon Santopadre each hit their first home runs of the season, as the latter drove in four runs to equal a career high. Fellow senior
Kyle Evans, starting behind the dish for the injured
Jack Monahan, was a perfect 3-for-3 with two walks, doubles, runs and RBIs. On the mound, sophomore
Colin Britton overcame a shaky start to toss six innings of three-run ball to pick up his second victory, while sophomore
Dan Ternowchek hurled the final three innings for his first career save.
On Wednesday, Dartmouth built up a 6-0 lead at Holy Cross before the Crusaders tied the game in the fifth with a six-run outburst. It proved not to matter in the final outcome as junior
Jim Wren came off the bench to provide the game-winning hit in the eighth for a 7-6 triumph.
Probable Starting Pitchers? The Big Green rotation is lining up as it has the first three conference weekends, as junior LHP
Robert Young (3-2, 5.29) will start the opener. He battled some wildness last time out, issuing five walks, but he only allowed two runs to cross the plate. Junior RHP
Ben Murray (4-1, 3.95), third in the Ivy League in ERA, will get the ball in game two on Saturday. He has walked just three batters all season and ranks 13th nationally in fewest walks per nine innings (0.99).
? On Sunday, the freshman brigade will be called upon to finish out the series. Rookie RHP
Kyle Hendricks (3-2, 4.86), fresh off a seven-strikeout performance against the Bears, will go in game one. The final game ball will be handed to RHP
Cole Sulser (2-1, 9.32), the team's strikeout leader. He is looking to rebound from his eight-run outing in 6.1 innings against Brown.
? Yale got three strong starting performances last week against Harvard. For the first game, RHP Brandon Josselyn (4-2, 4.97) will toe the slab one week after going the distance against the Crimson for the Bulldogs' lone win in the series. He yielded just two runs on six hits with six strikeouts. Another right-hander, RHP Joe Castaldi (0-4, 5.79) is still looking for his first win of the year, after getting stuck with a loss versus Harvard; he allowed just two earned runs in seven innings. The Elis will sent LHP Vinny Lally (3-2, 7.56) to the hill for the first game Sunday. In 25 innings, he has allowed just six extra-base hits (all doubles and a .253 average against him, but control has been his biggest Achilles' heel with 18 walks. The team's leading hitter, Andy Megee, has also emerged as a fourth starter. The right-hander has a 1.93 ERA in 14 innings, but 11 walks. Last week he gave up just two runs in six innings in a 3-2 walk-off loss.
The Overall Record vs. YaleNearly 200 games have been played in this series, and Yale has the historical edge at 113-77-1 overall against the Big Green. Three times the Bulldogs have won at least 10 consecutive games in the series, with a high of 12 straight from 1979-85. But since Bob Whelan took over the Dartmouth program in 1990, the Green are close to even at 34-36.
Scouting the Bulldogs? The highs haven't been very high this year, nor have the lows been too low for Yale. The Bulldogs' longest win streak is three thus far, and their worst losing streak was four.
? The offense doesn't put up gaudy numbers, having scored in double figures just once this year. In half its games, Yale has scored four or fewer runs.
? Third baseman Andy Megee tops the team with a .368 average, 10 doubles and three triples. But the power comes from first baseman Trygg Larsson-Danforth, who has six home runs and 28 RBIs, and right fielder Zach Tobolowsky (four long balls).
? The pitching staff owns the second-best ERA in the Ivy League at 6.06 overall and 4.83 in conference games. League opponents have hit just .273 against Bulldog hurlers with only four homers in 12 games.
? Yale doesn't generally hurt itself in the field, ranking second in the league with a .966 fielding percentage, just ahead of Dartmouth's .961. No Bulldog has committed more than six errors this year.
What's Up NextA single non-conference game is on the slate for the Big Green next week, at Vermont on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Dartmouth battered the Catamounts in Hanover this past Tuesday, 13-3.
