HANOVER, N.H. ? Senior Mike Pagliarulo (Winchester, Mass.) had a perfect day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a key three-run homer, to send Dartmouth to a 7-4 triumph over visiting Bryant on Wednesday afternoon at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park. The Big Green (26-15) utilized six pitchers on the day in a tune-up for the NCAA Regionals which begin on May 29. The Bulldogs (32-22) had their season come to close with a loss that snapped a five-game winning streak.
After Dartmouth junior left-hander Robert Young (Cleburne, Texas) put a pair of zeroes on the board, Bryant touched up freshman Kyle Hendricks (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) for two runs in the third. Jeff Vigurs stroked a double to score Dylan Stone and Nick Campbell who had both singled.
The Big Green got to Bulldog hurler Chris Foundas (3-3) in the fourth as the first four batters reached base. Pagliarulo got things started with a single between short and third, and senior Ray Allen (Longwood, Fla.) doubled him to third. The bases were loaded after junior Jim Wren (Granbury, Texas) was hit by a pitch, and junior Ezra Josephson (Key West, Fla.) beat out an infield hit to get Dartmouth on the board. A double-play grounder brought home the tying run, but senior Johnathon Santopadre (Vacaville, Calif.) delivered a two-out double to put the Big Green ahead for good.
In the fifth, freshman Jake Carlson (Woodlands, Texas) was hit by a pitch leading off the frame, causing Bryant to turn to the bullpen. But Nick Laude never got to face a batter due to getting hit in the face by the catcher's throw back to the mound after his final warm-up toss. In his place, Brian O'Neil was summoned, who walked his first batter, then coughed up Pagliarulo's four-bagger that just snuck over the fence in right-center. It was his sixth home run of the year and gave Dartmouth a 6-2 lead.
The Bulldogs got a home run of their own in the sixth, a two-run shot off the bat of Jamie Skagerlind. It was his sixth long ball of the season as well, cutting the Bryant deficit to two at 6-4.
The final run of the day came in the bottom of the seventh, beginning with a lead-off single by Santomauro. Again Bryant went to the pen, this time calling upon John Michael Ryan, who threw a ball away trying to pick Santomauro off first. Pagliarulo then hit a ball up the middle for a single, and only a diving stop by second baseman Dylan Stone kept the hit from scoring Santomauro. It did not matter, however, as Allen got the run home with a fielder's choice.
Sophomores Dan Ternowchek (Glenmoore, Pa.) and Ryan Smith (Greenlawn, N.Y.) both tossed a shutout inning, each yielding just a lead-off single, with Smith earning his 11th save of the season.
Picking up the victory was junior Ben Murray (Grants Pass, Ore.) who retired all six batters he faced ? five on ground balls ? in the fourth and fifth innings to improve to 5-1 on the year.
Dartmouth out-hit the Bulldogs on the afternoon, 10-9, with Allen picking up a pair of hits for the Big Green.
Campbell led Bryant with three singles in four trips to the plate, while Vigurs had a couple of doubles and Skagerlind had two hits, including his home run.
Dartmouth, the Ivy League champion, is awaiting the selection show on May 25 to discover in which NCAA Regional the squad will be placed. The tournament begins on May 29.
