First Regional in 22 YearsDartmouth is making its sixth appearance in the NCAA Tournament, but first since 1987. That Big Green squad defeated Michigan in the first round before faltering the next two games to Fordham and Rider. Back in 1970, Dartmouth won the District I playoff to advance to the College World Series for the only time in the program's history. All told, the Big Green have a 6-10 record in the NCAA Tournament.
A Look at the Big Green? Dartmouth earned the Ivy League's automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament by defeating Cornell in the Ivy Championship best-of-three series, two games to one.
? In order to play in the championship series, the Big Green outgunned Brown in the Rolfe Division by one game with a league-best 16-4 mark.
? Since dropping its first eight games of the season, Dartmouth has not lost consecutive games.
? The Big Green also rattled off 13 straight victories, the third longest in school history, with 11 coming against the Ivy League.
? On 16 occasions the Dartmouth bats have put at least 10 runs on the board, and 15 times in the last 26 contests.
? The squad has set school records with 339 runs, 43 home runs and 19 triples thus far this year.
? The offense is led by junior
Nick Santomauro, the Ivy League Player of the Year. The right fielder leads the team with a .365 average and 13 doubles while belting eight homers and driving in 40 runs.
? He is one of four players to have at least 40 RBIs, with both senior DH
Ray Allen and junior left fielder
Jim Wren ? both first team All-Ivy selections ? leading the squad with 44.
? Allen also has a team-high 10 homers, one shy of the school record.
? Setting the table is another All-Ivy first-teamer, freshman shortstop
Joe Sclafani, who has scored 50 runs while hitting .351.
? Senior first baseman
Mike Pagliarulo, son of the former major leaguer, has 40 RBIs with 12 doubles and six homers.
? Illness slowed sophomore second sacker
Jeff Onstott early in the year, but he has rebounded to hit .402 over his last 23 games.
? On the mound, Dartmouth will rarely beat itself by walking opposing hitters ? the Big Green have the lowest walks per nine innings in the country at 2.27.
? Three starters possess an ERA in the fours: juniors
Robert Young (4.57) and
Ben Murray (4.80), and freshman
Kyle Hendricks (4.14).
? Young generally squares off against an opponent's best pitcher, yet is still 5-3 on the season.
? Hendricks was a second-team All-Ivy performer, winning each of his starts against Ivy opponents.
? He and Murray top the team with six wins apiece.
? Sophomore closer
Ryan Smith, another All-Ivy second-teamer, has not allowed a run in 17 of his 24 appearances, saving a school-record 11 games including his first nine opportunities.
? The defense has been stellar of late, committing just three errors over the last eight games for a .990 fielding percentage. Overall, Dartmouth has a respectable .962 fielding percentage and has turned a school-record 48 double plays.
? The Big Green has not allowed an unearned run since April 26 and just two in their last 12 games.
? Sclafani has the most assists in the league far and away with 152 from his position at shortstop.
? The top two catchers, seniors
Jack Monahan and
Kyle Evans, have not committed an error this year, while Monahan has a streak of 569 chances without an error dating back to his freshman year.
The Overall Record vs. North CarolinaIt has been 48 years since these two schools met on the diamond, and 83 years since the Big Green defeated North Carolina. The Tar Heels hold a 5-2 advantage in the series that dates back just over 100 years to April of 1908 when the squads split two contests. The last meeting was a 9-4 victory for UNC on March 23, 1961.
First Time for EverythingWhile Dartmouth played Kansas for the first time ever last year, dropping an 8-6 decision in Florida, the Big Green have never played Coastal Carolina.
Scouting the Tar Heels? North Carolina is the fourth seed nationally and currently ranked seventh by Collegiate Baseball and eighth by Baseball America.
? The Tar Heels have advanced to the College World Series each of the last three years.
? In the ACC Tournament, UNC started off with a win over Duke before losing to #14 Virginia and #13 Clemson.
? The offense was in the middle of the pack in the ACC with a .301 average and 7.14 runs per game.
? One of the top projected picks in the upcoming MLB First-Year Draft is junior Dustin Ackley (.399/.505/.759) with his 20 homers and 61 RBIs.
? Two other Tar Heels boast double-digit homers in Levi Michael and Mark Fleury with 13 and 12, respectively. But Michael has fanned 50 times, while Fleury leads the team with 60 whiffs.
? The pitching staff is what makes this an elite team, leading the country with 586 strikeouts while posting a 3.71 ERA, putting them among the top 10. Opponents are hitting just 2.43 against the Tar Heels.
? Adam Warren and Alex White make for a great starting 1-2 punch with seven wins apiece and more than a strikeout per inning. Opponents are hitting under .240 against each of them.
? Out of the pen, Brian Moran pitches more often than not with 32 relief appearances and a sparkling 2.09 ERA in 60.1 innings. He has struck out 82 hitters and walked just eight while yielding a .183 average and just two home runs.
? The North Carolina defense ranks among the top 50 nationally with a .970 fielding percentage.
? Opposing base stealers have been caught about one-third of the time (35 SB in 52 attempts).
? One last interesting item ? North Carolina has lost three games this year when leading after eight innings, but is 0-10 when trailing entering the ninth.
Scouting the Chanticleers? Coastal Carolina is currently ranked 20th by Collegiate Baseball and 25th by Baseball America.
? The Chanticleers qualified for the tournament by winning the Big South Conference Tournament, defeating Winthrop in the title game, 7-1.
? Three times this year Coastal has posted win streaks of at least 11 games, including a 14-gamer.
? The Chants feature the most potent offense in this regional with a line of .333/.420/.535 (batting/on-base/slugging) and 8.42 runs per game. They also will run quite a bit with 118 stolen bases thus far.
? First baseman David Anderson leads the team in the triple crown stats with a .389 average, 20 jacks and 79 RBIs.
? Both third baseman Tyler Bortnick and DH
Adam Rice are hitting over .370 as well.

? Cody Wheeler is the ace with a perfect 10-0 mark and 3.34 ERA in 89 innings with 96 punchouts.
? Anthony Meo is not too shabby at 9-2 with a 2.92 ERA, while Nick McCully is the relief specialist with a 7-1 mark, eight saves and a 1.92 ERA.
? Another solid defense with a .968 fielding percentage and only 32 unearned runs allowed. About 35 percent of base stealers have been thrown out.
Scouting the Jayhawks? Kansas is an at-large participant here in Chapel Hill after going 37-22 overall and 15-12 in the Big 12.
? The Jayhawks lost all three games at the Big 12 Tournament, including the consolation game.
? Against top 25 teams, Kansas went 13-12 this year, including series sweeps over No. 1 Texas and No. 17 Oklahoma.
? The offense is batting .302/.389/.456, which ranks in the middle of the Big 12 in all three categories, yet is third in the league in scoring (7.24 per game).
? Third baseman Tony Thompson is the offensive star with a .374 average, 19 homers and 78 RBIs.
? Three other Jayhawks are batting at least .340, with right fielder Brian Heere at .363.
? Although not as good as the other two schools, Kansas still ranks among the top 30 in ERA at 4.36.
? Cody Wheeler is the ace with a perfect 10-0 mark and 3.34 ERA in 89 innings with 96 punchouts.
? T.J. Walz leads the staff with an 8-2 mark, 4.18 ERA and 86 strikeouts, while fellow starters Shaeffer Hall and Lee Ridenhour have ERAs of 4.63 and 4.65, respectively.
? Closer Paul Smyth has nine saves, but is also 1-5 with an ERA of 5.00.
? Team defense is just a notch below the top two seeds here as well, but still strong with a .965 fielding percentage. Shortstop Dave Nardowski has 20 of the team's 78 errors.
? Not many teams run against the Jayhawks with just 29 stolen bases and 17 caught stealing.
? Kansas also features Jason Brunansky, the son of a 14-year big league veteran, Tom Brunansky.
Sample Size IssuesWhile the top three seeds here in Chapel Hill have all played at least 58 games this year, Dartmouth has just 43 on its ledger. But with the game against the host Tar Heels, the Big Green will set a school record for games played in a season.
Freaky FridayThe first game of the regional takes place on Friday, which has not been kind to Dartmouth this year. The Big Green have played three games on a Friday and have lost all three, two of them to an ACC school (Duke). The combined score of the three games is 33-6, but a 19-0 loss to San Jos? State back on March 20 skews that data a bit.
Ranked OpponentsDartmouth has played just one game against a ranked opponent all season, that being a 14-9 loss at then 12th-ranked Cal Poly on March 25. That will change quickly with the game against #7 North Carolina and possibly #20 Coastal Carolina.
Against the FieldThe Big Green played four games against teams in the NCAA Tournament field, all on the road and two coming on Sunday at Army. In those games, Dartmouth went 1-3 with losses to Cal Poly (14-9) and Boston College (3-0), then a doubleheader split with the Black Knights (8-7 loss and 11-3 victory).
