Dartmouth College junior outfielder
Nick Santomauro (North Caldwell, N.J.) was selected in the 10th round of the Major League Baseball (MLB) First-Year Player Draft by the New York Mets with the 314th overall pick. Santomauro was the Ivy League Player of the Year this spring, a unanimous selection for the All-Ivy First Team and the Blair Bat Winner as the league's leading hitter in league contests with a .473 batting average. With Santomauro leading the charge, the Big Green won the Ivy title to advance to the NCAA Regionals for the first time in 22 years.
Santomauro, a 6-2, 205-pound left-handed hitter, posted a .372 average with eight home runs, 40 RBIs and 13 doubles while ranking among the league's top 10 in eight separate offensive categories to earn the Player of the Year award. The right fielder has been on the All-Ivy First Team each of his three seasons at Dartmouth, and was a unanimous selection for the second straight year. Twice this year Santomauro was named the Ivy League's Player of the Week, and on three occasions he delivered a hit that either tied the game or put Dartmouth in the lead during the Big Green's final at-bat.
For his career, Santomauro is currently third all-time at Dartmouth with a .376 batting average, fourth with 76 walks, sixth with 19 home runs, ninth with 108 RBIs, 11th with 169 career hits, 12th with seven triples, and 14th with 107 runs scored and 32 doubles. As a sophomore, he tied the school record by hitting 11 home runs while leading the team to a Rolfe Division title.
Santomauro's teammates voted him the team MVP and the top offensive player this year, while the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association selected him for the Division I Second Team, the third straight year Santomauro was picked for either the first or second team.
Last year, Dartmouth had two players taken in the draft off the Big Green roster ? outfielder
Damon Wright '08 in the 25th round by the San Francisco Giants and left-handed pitcher
Russell Young '08 in the 28th round by the Cleveland Indians. In addition, incoming freshman right-handed pitcher
Kyle Hendricks '12 was taken in the 39th round by the Los Angeles Angels last year, but he elected to enroll at Dartmouth. Hendricks was a second team All-Ivy pitcher in his rookie campaign, tying for the conference lead with six victories.
Santomauro is the eighth selection from Dartmouth to be taken in the top 10 rounds of the June draft, which began in 1965, and the first Big Green player taken in the top 10 rounds since shortstop Ed Lucas '04 in 2004 by the Kansas City Royals (eighth round).
