HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth College today announced that assistant baseball coach
Nicholas Enriquez has been promoted to the top assistant coaching position by head coach
Bob Whalen. Enriquez has been on Whalen's staff for the past five years, including this past spring when the Big Green made their first appearance in an NCAA Regional in 22 years.
“This will be the most seamless transition for any of the assistant coaches that I have hired at Dartmouth, due in part to the fact that Nick has been here for five years,” Coach Whalen stated. “He has proven his dedication and loyalty to the program and to myself, plus has demonstrated his coaching talent on both the field and the recruiting trail. Nick, without a doubt, has earned this appointment.”
Enriquez joined the coaching staff for the 2004-05 school year and has coached the outfielders while assisting with the hitters and recruiting. During his tenure, the Big Green have had 11 positional players selected for the All-Ivy First Team and two outfielders taken in the MLB First-Year Player Draft in
Damon Wright in 2008 and
Nick Santomauro — the 2009 Ivy League Player of the Year — last month.
Dartmouth has won the Ivy's Rolfe Division each of the past two seasons, and took home the league crown this year to qualify for the NCAA Regionals, finishing the season with a record of 27-18. The offense set team records for home runs, triples and runs scored while posting the best record in Ivy League play at 16-4.
A 2001 graduate of Menlo College in Atherton, Calif., with a degree in business administration, Enriquez was a four-year letterman and two-year starter in the infield for the Oaks. After graduating, he was hired by his alma mater as the sports information director and assistant baseball coach from August 2001 until October 2004. Menlo set a school record for victories during his second season on the coaching staff. He also served as the sports information director for the 12-team California Pacific Conference during 2003-04.
During two summers while coaching at Menlo, Enriquez came East to coach the Amsterdam (N.Y.) Mohawks of the New York Collegiate Baseball League. He served as an assistant in 2002 before taking the reins as the head coach the following year, leading the Mohawks to an overall record of 62-30 and a pair of league championships during his tenure.
From August 1999 to October 2004, Enriquez also served as an associate scout in Northern California for the Houston Astros. He worked with the MLB Roadshow from May-August 2001, providing instruction to local teams in England, Germany, Holland, the Czech Republic and Scotland.
"It is a privilege and honor to be on the coaching staff at Dartmouth College,” Enriquez said. “To be coaching at one of the finest colleges in America is an opportunity for which I am very thankful. Dartmouth baseball is a very unique college baseball program, and I am honored to be a part of it."
