RALEIGH, N.C. - The Dartmouth women's volleyball dropped its first two games at the NC State Raleigh Crabtree Valley Marriott Classic on Friday. Xavier defeated the Big Green, 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-18), in the first match of the day before Dartmouth dropped a 3-2 match (23-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-16, 15-13) to Depaul in the nightcap.
Xavier (2-5) sprinted out to a 1-6 lead in the first set, right into a Dartmouth timeout, and controlled the game from start to finish. After the break, the Big Green scored a couple points but the Musketeers recorded back-to-back kills to give XU the 10-4 advantage. Xavier pushed the lead to seven, 15-8, and Dartmouth called its second TO of the frame but it wasn't enough as the Big Green dropped the first set.
Dartmouth (2-1) came out strong in the second set, jumping out to a 4-1 advantage. Two XU kills and a Big Green ball handling error knotted the set at four apiece. Tied again at five-all, the Musketeers rattled off seven straight points before an XU service error gave Dartmouth sideout at 12-6. Xavier held the lead for the rest of the set and ended the game with a 3-0 run (25-11) to take a 2-0 advantage into intermission.
After the break, both teams traded points through a 7-7 tie before XU broke open the set with a 9-2 run to take a commanding 16-9 lead. The Big Green pulled to within three, 20-17, but the Musketeers finished out the set with three straight points to take the frame, 25-18, and the match, 3-0.
The Big Green was led by Madeline Baird (Austin, Texas) with seven kills and Amber Bryant (Libertyville, Ill.) with nine digs.
In the second match of the day, Dartmouth took a 2-0 lead on DePaul and looked like it had the match in hand but the Blue Demons came from behind and tied the match at 2-2 before taking the fifth and deciding set.
DePaul out-hit Dartmouth, tallying 64 kills compared to 48. The Big Green surged into a decisive lead, edging the Blue Demons in the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-21.
DePaul clawed its way back into the match winning the third set capitalizing on a paltry Big Green hitting percentage of .036, while recording 16 kills.
Dartmouth took an early 4-1 lead on back-to-back kills from Megan MacGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.). But the Blue Demons went on an 8-2 run to put DePaul back in the lead. Two straight kills from the Blue Demons brought DePaul to match point. A service error from Dartmouth capped off the Blue Demon comeback
Baird and Annie Villanueva (Santa Barbara, Calif.) paced Dartmouth with 12 kills each. Baird finished with a double-double with 13 digs.
The Big Green returns to action at 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning taking on Rutgers, followed by a 7:00 p.m. match with host NC State.
