San Diego, Calif. - Junior Daniel Keat (Wellington, New Zealand) scored two goals in five minutes late in the game but it was not enough as #18 Loyola Marymount defeated #5 Dartmouth at the San Diego Nike Classic today.
It was the first loss of the season for the Big Green, which drops to 4-1-1, while LMU improves to 4-2.
Overall Dartmouth had more opportunities than Loyola Marymount, holding an 11-8 shot advantage and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Lions took only two shots in the first half but made good on their second with less than two minutes before halftime. Andrew Kristof sent a free kick into the box and after a scramble, Steffen Canty secured the ball and put it past freshman keeper Sean Donovan (Burr Ridge, Ill.) for the 1-0 lead in the 44th minute.
LMU kept it up in the second half extending its lead to 2-0 in the 52nd minute. The Lions mounted a counterattack out of their own defensive end and after Candy and Roger Downes played the ball in and out of the box, Rafael Baca slipped the ball into an open goal.
The Lions held the Big Green at bay until the 76th minute, when Keat scored the first off his two goals. After a long throw in, Bryan Giudicelli (Emerald Hills, Calif.) flicked the ball to Keat who sent it home from the middle of the box, making it 2-1. Dartmouth kept its attack going and it was Keat again at 79:21 to tie the game. Adam Rice (Manalapan, N.J.) sent a through ball up to Craig Henderson (Wellington, New Zealand), who passed it across to Keat for a one-timer at the top of the box.
With the game tied 2-2 and 10 minutes to play, both teams picked up the pace. Baca came through again for Loyola Marymount in the 82nd minute, scoring the eventual game-winner from 30 yards out off a corner kick by William Johnson.
Dartmouth had several scoring opportunities in the final eight minutes including a shot by Rice that was saved and an Andrew Olsen (Norwell, Mass.) attempt that was blocked.
LMU held off the Big Green surge and took the 3-2 upset win. Donovan made one save in goal while LMU's Jack McCormack turned away three shots.
Both Henderson and Keat were named to the All-Tournament team. Just six games into the season, Keat has six goals and an assist, good for 13 points.
The Big Green is back in action this Saturday, Sept. 26 when it heads to Hartwick for a 7 p.m. start.
