Oneonta, N.Y. - The 14th ranked Dartmouth men's soccer team took a tough loss at Hartwick, which won its fourth straight, 2-0 this evening.
The Big Green (4-2-1) held an 11-6 shot advantage in the game and pressured the Hawks (5-2-1) with four shots on goal, but goalie Jeremy Vuolo came up with a save on each. Just three of Hartwick's shots were on goal but they made good on two to defeat Dartmouth.
Big Green rookie keeper Sean Donovan (Burr Ridge, Ill.) made one save in the loss.
Hartwick took a1-0 lead just before halftime, when Nick Roydhouse converted off a rebound after a Hawks' corner kick was deflected by the Dartmouth defense in the 40th minute. It was the fourth corner of the half for the Hawks while the Big Green also took four.
In the second half, the Hawks settled in with their lead, taking just two shots including one saved by Donovan. Dartmouth attacked early, with two quality attempts by Henderson (Wellington, New Zealand) in the first five minutes of the half including a shot saved by Vuolo. The teams traded fouls for much of the half and each squad kept a steady stream of substitutions on and off the field.
Dartmouth junior Walker Linares (Santa Cruz, Calif.) fired one in the 75th minute that Vuolo saved to preserve the shutout. The Hawks added to their lead in the 83rd minute when Dan Summers headed one past Donovan off a direct kick from Michael Cunningham.
The Big Green had a late corner kick in the 86th minute but could not convert and did not get another offensive attempt as Hartwick held on for the 2-0 shutout.
Henderson ultimately led the Big Green with six shots including three on goal.
Dartmouth looks to get back on track with a pair of home games this week, starting with New England rival Vermont on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 6 p.m.
