Kingston, R.I. — Dartmouth women's basketball head coach
Chris Wielgus has been named the 2008-09 New England Coach of the Year by the New England Basketball Hall of Fame.
Wielgus led the Big Green to its 17th Ivy League Championship and the 12th of her career at Dartmouth last season. The Big Green advanced to its seventh NCAA Tournament, all coming under her direction, also marking Dartmouth's fifth straight postseason appearance. Wielgus had led Dartmouth to at least a share of four of the last five Ivy Championships, and 2008-09 marked its first outright title since 2000.
Wielgus, who is a member of the New England Basketball Hall of Fame (2004 inductee) will be honored at its annual induction/award ceremony on October 9 at Mohegan Sun.
After a tough start against a strong non-conference slate, Wielgus and the Big Green won 15 of their last 16 contests to finish 18-11 overall and 13-1 in Ivy League play. During the course of the regular season, Dartmouth played 16 of 28 games on the road, at one point winning seven-straight for the second longest road streak in program history. In Ivy play, Wielgus had the Big Green just an overtime loss shy of completing its first-ever 14-0 league season. On the final night of the regular season, Dartmouth defeated Harvard to clinch a 13-1 record and the Ivy title. Wielgus also won her 400th career game that night and 363rd at Dartmouth.
Three Dartmouth players earned All-Ivy honors under Wielgus' tutelage last season, including first team All-Ivy teammates
Koren Schram '09 and
Brittney Smith '11 (Fort Worth, Texas) and second team All-Ivy pick
Darcy Rose '09. Smith was also named the Ivy League Player of the Year. In 24 seasons at Dartmouth, Wielgus has coached 77 All-Ivy honorees and 27 first-teamers.
The Big Green returns nine letterwinners and three starters from last year's Ivy Championship team. The 2009-10 season, Wielgus' 25th at Dartmouth, opens on Saturday, Nov. 14 when the Big Green hosts Bryant at 7 p.m.
