NEW YORK, N.Y. — The men's cross country team placed second at the Ivy Heptagonal Championship on Friday in New York, N.Y. It is the highest the team has finished since winning the event in 2005. The Big Green finished with 55 points, and Ethan Shaw (Falmouth, Maine) paced the squad, finishing third (24:23.7) overall.
"Shaw ran a great race," Head Coach Barry Harwick said." "He was up there with two guys who are probably going to be All-American's, and he stayed right with them."
Shaw wasn't the only Big Green runner to perform well. Three Dartmouth runners finished in order, placing 10th, 11th and 12th. Sophomore Phil Royer (Portsmouth, R.I.) crossed the finish line in 10th (24:45.3), senior Tom Robbins (Evanston, Ill.) placed 11th (24:48.5) and junior Brad Kenimer (Alexandria, Va.) finished 12th (24:51.7). Sophomore Jonathan Gault (Bedford, Mass.) rounded out the scoring in 19th (25:08.7).
"We had a plan going in of keeping Dartmouth runners close together, and that really worked well for us with Royer, Robbins and Kenimer," said Harwick.
Princeton won the championship with 33 points overall. Columbia finished in a distant third (94 points) and Penn placed fourth (118 points). Donn Cabral of Princeton took the overall individual title with a time of 24:03.8 and Harvard's Daniel Chenoworth finished second (24:14.0).
Shaw earned first team All-Ivy with his top seven finish and Royer, Robbins and Kenimer each made second team All-Ivy.
The Big Green look to build on this success when they travel to the NCAA Regional Championships on November 13 at Hammonsett Park, Conn.
"We are very confident going in to the Regional meet," said Harwick. "Our guys are really excited and we think we have a really good chance of qualifying for nationals."
