HANOVER, N.H. —Men's lacrosse associate head coach
Jon Torpey was named the head coach for the High Point University men's lacrosse team on Wednesday. He will remain on the Dartmouth staff through May of 2011 and will join the Panthers full time in June. Torpey will be the first men's lacrosse coach in the school's history when it plays its first season in the 2012-13 academic year.
"I told coach Towers and the rest of the staff it was going to be tough to leave Dartmouth," said Torpey. "But I feel this is an opportunity to be a head coach at an unbelievable place, and we are going to do great things there. For the next year though, I am committed to Dartmouth. I'm fully committed to seeing this season through and I want to win an Ivy League Championship. That is a goal that is not going to waver."
Torpey joined the Big Green staff in 2009-10 as the top assistant
and defensive coach after spending four years at the University of
Denver. In a 5-8 season for Dartmouth, he coached the Big Green to the
third-lowest goals against in the Ivy League and led the team to the
second-best penalty-killing percentage in the league. The highlight of
the season was holding sixth-ranked Cornell to six goals at Gillette
Stadium in the 8-6 upset win. The Big Red averaged 11.18 goals per game
during the 2010 season.
