HANOVER, N.H. - The
Dartmouth men's soccer team held its annual team banquet on April 30, honoring
individual players and recognizing the team's third straight NCAA Tournament
appearance.
Though their season ends in the fall, the Dartmouth men traditionally hold
their banquet in May marking the end of the spring season.
Dartmouth, which ranked in the top-25 throughout the season, finished the 2009
campaign with a record of 10-7-1, 4-3 Ivy. The Big Green earned its third
straight NCAA Tournament appearance and fifth in the last six years, ultimately
falling to Boston College in overtime in the first round.
The Big Green won a host of awards throughout the season including five players
named All-Ivy, three named NSCAA All-Region and NSCAA All-America honors for
Daniel Keat (Wellington, New Zealand), the second straight season in which
Dartmouth produced an All-America performer. Dartmouth was also rewarded for
its success in the classroom, named an NSCAA Team Academic Award winner.
Individually, Craig Henderson and Bryan Giudicelli were named to the NSCAA
Scholar All-East first and third teams, respectively. Henderson was also an
NSCAA Scholar All-America and CoSIDA Academic All-America choice.
2009 Dartmouth Men's Soccer Team Awards
Most Valuable Player:
Craig Henderson (Wellington, New Zealand), Senior midfield
Henderson was a repeat selection as Dartmouth's Most Valuable Player after an
impressive senior season. His impact was perhaps felt the greatest, however,
after being cut down by injury after nine games. He did return to play in the
final two games of the season, including a valiant double-overtime effort at
Boston College in just his second game back. Despite missing time, he tallied
12 points on four goals and four assists and was named second team All-Ivy and
second team NSCAA All-Region.
Will Shue Award (Rookie of the Year):
Kevin Dzierzawski (Oakland Twp., Mich.), Freshman midfield
Dzierzawski did a solid job in midfield for his first collegiate season, as one
of just four players and the only freshman to play in all 18 games, making 12
starts. He tallied one goal and three assists and was an integral link between
the Big Green's defense and offense. He earned Ivy Rookie of the Week honors
once during the season.
Most Improved Player, In Memory of Chris
Colasanti '90
Nick Pappas (Scottsdale, Ariz.), Sophomore defense
Pappas emerged as a top defensive player for Dartmouth this fall, playing in 16
games with 13 starts. His dedication to improving his game resulted in the jump
in playing time from his freshman year, during which he saw action in seven
contests. Pappas also scored his first collegiate goal in Dartmouth's
season-opening win over St. Peter's.
Norman Grant Clark Trophy:
Derek Stenquist (Hudson, Mass.), Senior midfield
Presented for contributions to Dartmouth soccer both on and off the field. Stenquist
exemplified the term student-athlete throughout his career and as a senior,
battled back from off-season surgery to play in 13 games with seven starts. Off
the field, he was the 2009 recipient of Dartmouth's Class of 1948 Award for the
top scholar athlete in the junior class and is active in numerous community
service organizations.
Lastly, Dartmouth announced the two men that will don the captain's armband
this fall to lead the Big Green. Daniel Keat (Wellington, New Zealand), a
fifth-year senior, returns for his second season as captain for Dartmouth. The
only player to start all 18 games, Keat returned from a 2008 injury to earn
NSCAA All-America honors after leading the team with eight goals and six
assists. Fellow rising senior Andrew Olsen (Norwell, Mass.) will join him as a
captain this fall. A starter since his freshman year, Olsen has been a constant
for his three seasons in Hanover, earning All-Ivy second team honors in 2008
and honorable mention in 2009. This past season he tallied three goals and two
assists.
