HANOVER, N.H. — In the 31st round, with the 938th pick of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, the Chicago White Sox selected Dartmouth senior left-hander Robert Young (Cleburne, Texas). Young is the 26th Big Green player to be taken in the amateur draft since its inception in 1965, joining his brother among that select group.
Young was a four-year starter on the mound for Dartmouth, setting a school record by starting 38 games in his career. In his 233.2 career innings, the sixth most in school history, he recorded a 5.82 ERA, 13-18 mark and one save. He always exhibited excellent command, walking just 51 batters (1.96 per nine innings) and striking out 146, nearly a 3-to-1 ratio.
During his junior campaign, Young had a 5-4 record and a 4.63 ERA, throwing a career-high 68.0 innings. Although he got a loss against seventh-ranked North Carolina in an NCAA Regional game, he held the Tar Heels to just four runs over seven innings. As a senior, he went 3-5 with a 7.46 ERA, including a seven-inning, complete-game shutout against Yale. In both seasons, Young served as team captain.
His brother, Russell Young '08, was chosen by the Cleveland Indians in the 28th round of the 2008 draft. The last Dartmouth player taken in the draft was Nick Santomauro '10, who was picked by New York Mets in the 10th round last year after his junior season. The outfielder signed with the Mets and is currently playing in Savannah of the South Atlantic League.
