HANOVER, N.H. — Collegiate Baseball announced its 2010 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-Americans today, and Dartmouth's
Chris O'Dowd (Cherry Hills Village, Colo.) was among those honored — one of only two Ivy Leaguers. The Big Green catcher was the Ivy League Co-Rookie of the Year as well as an All-Ivy honorable mention selection.
A switch-hitter at the plate, O'Dowd finished his first year third in the Ivy League with a .384 batting average, second with a .480 on-base percentage and sixth with a .640 slugging percentage, all figures that led the Dartmouth squad. In 125 at-bats, he collected 12 doubles to tie for team-high honors, slammed six home runs and drove in 26 runs while scoring 32 runs of his own. O'Dowd did not commit an error in 181 chances behind the plate.
The freshman finished the season on a seven-game hitting streak, going 15-for-29 (.517) with three doubles, two homers and nine RBIs. At the NCAA Regionals in Miami, O'Dowd went 2-for-5 in each of the three contests, scoring three times and driving in one.
O'Dowd is the sixth Dartmouth rookie to earn Freshman All-America status, and third in the past two years. Both right-hander
Kyle Hendricks (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and shortstop
Joe Sclafani (Palm City, Fla.) were chosen last year. Others to be honored with inclusion were pitcher Stephen Perry (2004), first baseman Mike Mileusnic (2001) and infielder Brian Nickerson (1997).
