Valley News Staff WriterBrewster, Mass. -- The last time most Dartmouth baseball fans saw pitcher
Kyle Hendricks, the beleaguered sophomore was allowing 10 hits and 11 earned runs in just three innings of work. Shortly thereafter, the Big Green lost its NCAA regional tournament opener to the homestanding University of Miami Hurricanes.
It was virtually impossible not to feel compassion for a 20-year-old facing one of the country's most potent lineups and yielding an uncharacteristic three walks and four home runs on national television. Nearly a month later, however, the lanky Californian has not only put his regional troubles behind him, he's putting some of the country's best collegiate players in their place.
In his first four appearances for the Brewster Whitecaps of the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League, Hendricks was 1-0 with a 1.20 earned-run average and one save. He struck out 15 batters and walked one in a combined 15 innings of work, impressing manager Tom Myers, a former minor league player and the University of California-Santa Barbara's pitching coach during the school year.
