LYNN – The North Shore Navigators needed a victory to continue their season last night in the second game of their best-of-three series with the Newport Gulls. When all was said and done, Navigators starter
Michael Johnson had come within one out of a complete game shutout against the NECBL's most lethal offense in a 2-0 Navigators win to force a decisive Game 3 tonight in Newport.
Johnson allowed a leadoff walk in the second before the runner was erased on a double play, and Connor Harrell singled in the third but was gunned down by left fielder Jason Banos trying to take second. Johnson retired the next seven before a hit by pitch to lead off the sixth, but that runner was also erased on a twin killing.
Johnson went on to retire the next ten batters he faced, including the first two Gulls hitters of the ninth, as the left-hander was just one out away from facing the minimum 27 hitters before he allowed back-to-back singles.
