HANOVER, N.H. — The men's cross country team opened the 2010 season on Saturday morning with a home meet featuring four teams — Yale, Middlebury, Williams and host Dartmouth. Big Green junior Ethan Shaw (Falmouth, Maine) finished first to lead Dartmouth to a five-point victory over the Bulldogs.
Dartmouth and Yale dominated the race as each team had five runners among the top 10. But with Shaw finishing the 8K race with a time of 25:28.50 and four others among the top eight, the Big Green were able to take home the team title with 25 points to 30 for the Bulldogs. Sophomore Phil Royer (Portsmouth, R.I.) was barely seven seconds behind Shaw to place third at 25:37.90, while a trio of Dartmouth runners finished 6-7-8.
The third Dartmouth runner to cross the finish line was sophomore Jonathan Gault (Bedford, Mass.) in 25:53.11, followed closely by junior Brad Kenimer (Alexandria, Va.) at 25:54.03. Rookie John Bleday (Westwood, Mass.) had an impressive collegiate debut race by placing eighth with a time of 25:59.04.
Dartmouth totaled 25 points for the race with Yale scoring 30. Williams and Middlebury posted 95 and 98 points, respectively.
The Big Green will return to the trails on Friday, Oct. 1 for the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa.
